Actress Tia Mowry recently uploaded a video on Instagram talking against police brutality, as she shared how shaken she was after watching the video of an officer killing a Black Illinois woman, Sonya Massey. In the Instagram video uploaded on July 24, a visibly emotional Tia Mowry shared:
“Okay, so… sorry. I know that this is a very unglamorous video, but I just saw the video of Sonya, and my heart goes out to her family. I am literally shaking right now because to see how someone’s life can be taken in such a way is so terrible and so disgusting. When is this going to stop?”
Tia Mowry continued talking about how she fears for her 13-year-old son, Cree, and said:
“I saw many people talk about influencers and how people need to say something, and here I am. You all know how passionate I am about my community and my people, and to have a young Black boy who is tall, who is Black and I guess what I’m saying is, I worry. I worry. And now I’m going to have another conversation with him about being careful. When is this going to stop? When is enough, enough?”
Sonya Massey was shot on July 6, 2024, by Illinois Sheriff’s Deputy Sean Grayson as she called 911 to report an intruder. However, as the police walked in, Grayson reportedly killed Sonya in her own home. Furthermore, in the bodycam footage from police, Massey was seen being shot in the face multiple times.
Sean Grayson has been fired and now faces multiple charges: Details explored as Tia Mowry highlights the issue of Police brutality
On July 6, the police entered Sonya Massey's premises after she had called 911 about a possible intruder, according to court documents. However, as the police entered the house, Officer Sean Grayson allegedly argued with Massey, and he yelled at her to put down the pot of boiling water.
Hollywood Reporter stated that Sean Grayson had already been fired from his position when the incident occurred. He has now been charged with three counts of first-degree murder, aggravated battery, and official misconduct. However, Sean has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The 36-minute long bodycam footage that is doing rounds on social media also shows Massey ducking as soon as Sean pulls out his gun. As she apologizes to the officer, he shoots her multiple times, which leaves her dead on the spot.
As Tia Mowry spoke about the issue, social media users have again dived into a heated debate.
Tia Mowry is not the only celebrity who has spoken out about the incident, as many other celebrities and politicians, including Solange Knowles, President Joe Biden, and Vice President Kamala Harris, have condemned the act.
