Vice President Kamala Harris was spotted opening a can of beer with Stephen Colbert on the October 8 episode of The Late Show. The Democratic Presidential nominee discussed various issues on the show, including her race with Trump and the situation in Gaza.
In the viral clip from The Late Show, Stephen Colbert told Harris that elections are usually won on "vibes" before inviting her to drink a can of Miller High Life with him on the show.
"When you first became the nominee and named Tim Walz as your Vice President nominee, people were calling it the vibe election. All the vibes were all good. But elections I think are won on vibes, because one of the old saws is they just want somebody they can have a beer with. So would you like to have a beer with me so I can tell people what that's like?," he said.
Kamala Harris agreed to Colbert's proposal, as she took over a can of Miller High Life on camera. She also revealed that she last had a beer with her husband, Doug Emhoff, at a baseball game.
"The champagne of beers," Harris said, after taking a sip from her can.
Fans on X were left divided on Harris's gesture. While some considered it relatable, others criticized her for drinking.
"I prefer a President who doesn't drink. One who I know will be sober if that 3 a.m. phone call ever comes," One X user said.
"Incredibly stupid moment. Fixed it for you. Stephen Colbert is your typical, Hollywood liberal elitist hypocrite," another user opined.
"She has a drinking problem," a person alleged.
"Is this like when Elizabeth Warren drank a beer on video to pretend like she was like us commoners? Cus that’s what this smells like," a netizen observed.
Some people considered her gesture relatable and appreciated her nature.
"All Her recent interviews were so relatable!!!! She’s human unlike the mango," one person commented.
"Well, she drinks, she shoots, she doesn’t cave, and she listens. Can a candidate be more perfect?," another person chimed in.
"Awesome I’d much rather have a beer with her," an individual mentioned.
Some other X users continued to criticize Kamala Harris, alleging that she has a drinking problem.
"So the chick that everyone believes is an alcoholic drinks a beer on air and THAT is an incredible moment? You people have so lost this!!😂," a person opined.
"Kamala is drinking while Americans she abandoned in the Southeast are dy*ng. What’s wrong with you?," a user criticized.
"As Florida prepares for Hurricane Milton, Vice President Kamala Harris is on Stephen Colbert’s show, cackling and slamming Miller High Life beers," another netizen added.
It is worth noting that Kamala Harris cracking open a can of beer differentiated her from President Joe Biden and her opponent, Donald Trump, who are both reportedly nondrinkers.
"This war has got to end"— Kamala Harris addresses the situation in Gaza on The Late Show
Multiple politicians, including Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, have been on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert over the years. In the October 8 segment of the show, Harris discussed a range of political issues with the host, including the war in Gaza. When Colbert asked her about Hamas's attack on Israel on October 7 last year and the state's response, Harris replied:
“We must have a ceasefire and hostage deal as immediately as possible. This war has got to end. It has to end.”
Harris agreed that talks on reaching a ceasefire are meaningless until it is achieved. The Vice President added that she has personally met and interacted with some of the family members of hostages and those killed in Gaza.
“We’ve got to get a deal done and we’re not going to give up," she added.
Later, in the 40-minute interview, Kamala Harris also addressed reports of former President Donald Trump having seven private phone calls with Russian President Vladimir Putin. These claims emerged from the book War by journalist Bob Woodward.
In his book, Woodward claimed that Trump was sending Covid test machines to Russia in 2020 when the pandemic was raging dangerously in the United States. The former President has denied such allegations. Speaking of the same, Kamala Harris told Colbert:
"He openly admires dictators and authoritarians. He has said he wants to be a dictator on day one if he were elected again as president. He gets played by these guys. He admires so-called strongmen and he gets played because they flatter him or offer him favour."
"I ask everyone here and everyone who is watching: do you remember what those days were like? You remember how many people did not have tests and were trying to scramble to get them? And this man is giving Covid test kits to Vladimir Putin? Think about what this means on top of him sending love letters to Kim Jong-un. He thinks, well, that’s his friend. What about the American people? They should be your first friend.”
Finally, Kamala Harris also poked fun at Trump's claims about not losing the 2020 elections, where Joe Biden defeated the former President. The Vice President recalled a comment by someone at one of her rallies and reiterated that Trump lost jobs, manufacturing, and the election, making him "a loser" anyway.
