Nearly four years after a newborn girl dubbed Baby India was found in a plastic bag in the woods of the northern part of Georgia, the police were successful in identifying and arresting Karima Jiwani, the mother of the child. The 40-year-old was arrested on Thursday, May 18, 2023. The accused has been charged with criminal attempts to commit murder, cruelty to children in the first degree, aggravated assault, and reckless abandonment.

The New York Post stated that the authorities had already identified the child’s father through advanced DNA investigation practice. However, the father claimed that he was not aware of Karima's pregnancy or the abandonment of the newborn. Karima's DNA also matched Baby India's.

As for Baby India, she was found alive in the wooded area in Forsyth County on June 6, 2019. At the time, a local family complained about hearing loud crying from the nearby woods and found the baby lying in the bag. The authorities also claimed that she still had the umbilical cord attached to her. She was then put up for adoption and was ultimately sent to foster care.

The authorities have not revealed where the baby is exactly, but have stated that she is "happy and healthy."

More than 1,000 people wanted to adopt Baby India when she was first put up for adoption four years ago

As Karima was arrested on Thursday, four years after she abandoned her child, the authorities claimed that the baby was only hours old when she was put in a bag and left in the woods in Georgia. The Authorities also claimed that chances are that the child was born in a vehicle. Furthermore, Forsyth County Sheriff Ron Freeman also revealed:

“Little can explain how this happened, and no motive can justify that decision. Jiwani made no effort to leave this child, not only under ‘Safe (Haven) Law,’ but in any place this child could be found.”

Freeman also talked about Jiwani’s history of hiding and concealing pregnancies. The Sheriff claimed that Karima "went to extremes to conceal it." As per Freeman, these facts have been confirmed by Karima's friends and family members. Many family members also claimed that the woman knew about the pregnancy for a long time.

However, when Baby India was first found, the authorities claimed that more than 1,000 people came forward from all over the world to adopt her. At the time, Freeman claimed:

“It’s amazing the number of people who are looking to take on a new life into their families, and we got somebody who tried to throw one away.”

Furthermore, Freeman also recalled how the authorities received a call from the neighbors who found a plastic bag and reported that a baby was inside it, covered in blood. As soon as the authorities arrived, the baby grasped the finger of the officers.

Karima Jiwani, Baby India’s mother, made her first virtual appearance in court from the Forsyth County Jail. If convicted, she faces up to 30 years in prison.
