Luigi Mangione, the suspect accused of killing United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, was arrested on Monday, December 9. Forbes reported that law enforcement officials arrested Mangione in Altoona, Pennsylvania after a McDonald’s employee recognized him and called the authorities.
According to online court records obtained by the publication, Luigi was initially taken in on firearm charges. He was later charged with Brian's murder. Amid the tragic incident, social media users talked about if there is a connection between Luigi Mangione and American musician, Chuck Mangione.
However, there is no connection between Luigi and Chuck Mangione, despite sharing the same surname. A user (@a_clown_prince) wrote:
"Guess chuck mangione isn't the most famous mangione anymore."
"Okay- did the dude's name have to be Luigi Mangione???? Memories of listening to Chuck Mangione come flooding back," wrote a netizen on Facebook.
"Is Luigi Mangione’s name pronounced like Chuck Mangione? I only know that name bc of King of the Hill lol," joked a user on X.
For the unversed, Chuck Mangione is an American composer, flugelhorn player, and trumpeter. Some of his notable singles include, Feels So Good, Chase the Clouds Away and more.
While Luigi has no connection to the American singer, it is important to note that the former comes from a prominent and wealthy family in Maryland. According to CBS News, he has been a part of a family that currently owns a number of country clubs, including the Haysfield Country Club in Hunt Valley.

As per the latest update, BBC reported that while arresting Luigi, the authorities found him at McDonald's with a ghost gun. A few hours after being detained, authorities charged him with murder and four other counts, such as forging a document and possessing a firearm.
While giving insights into the suspected shooter's prominent family background, CBS News reported that he is also the cousin of Maryland Republican Delegate Nino Mangione, who has been representing portions of the Baltimore County. In a statement, Nino said:
"Unfortunately, we cannot comment on news reports regarding Luigi Mangione. We only know what we have read in the media. Our family is shocked and devastated by Luigi's arrest."
The suspect's late grandpa, Nicholas Mangione Sr., was the owner of multiple country clubs, nursing homes, and a radio station as well. Grandmother Mary was a hospital benefactor and a music patron, as per the obituary.
Nicholas Mangione Sr. was seemingly quite proud of where he came from, since he was a self-made man. On July 17, 1995, he told The Baltimore Sun:
"They asked me what family I belonged to. I told them, 'I belong to the Mangione family. The Mangione family of Baltimore County.'"
Moreover, Luigi Mangione's mother, Kathleen Zannino Mangione, is a boutique travel company owner and his sister, MariaSanta Mangione, is a renowned doctor. According to The Mail, MariaSanta is currently working as a medical resident at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.
Luigi Mangione also purchased a fancy and luxurious retreat and conference center named the Turf Valley Resort outside Baltimore in 1978. According to The Baltimore Banner, the Mangione family has also been heavily associated with the Greater Baltimore Medical Center (GBMC). The prominent family has reportedly donated more than $1 million to the hospital.
The family of the suspect has not made any further comments on his arrest as of now.
