A tweet about a customer confessing their love to a Walmart chat representative has been going viral on X. On October 7, X user @3laichi posted a screenshot of their conversation with the chat rep, which amassed 4.1 million views and 319K likes at the time of this article.
In the screenshot, the chat rep praised the customer for being "calm and understanding." The message added that the customer had "a beautiful heart" and hoped to meet more people like them. The customer replied with:
"I love you thank you."
A caption was also attached to the screenshot, in which the @3laichi called the chat rep a "kindred soul," hoping to be reunited in another life.
"Oh fatima … I hope in our next lives we can be reunited. Not as my Walmart chat representative, but as a kindred spirit who sees me for who I am," the post read.
The message was vastly appreciated on social media, with people happy at the heartwarming exchange. However, some pointed out the message was a copy-and-paste text, adding they had received the same message before.
Many concurred with the above sentiment, adding that it wasn't just Walmart sending such heartfelt automated messages. Another user said they had received similar messages from Apple as well.
"It really is copy paste, this ain’t even walmart and i got the same message," one person tweeted.
"Finding out this is all copy and paste made me cry," another person added.
"It's AI. They announced this a year and a half ago," another user wrote.
However, others found the humor in the situation, adding that a message like this would have made their month. Some also commented that the original poster's love confession felt very relatable.
"No this would absolutely make my whole month," one person tweeted.
"The “I love you” so meee," another person added.
"I thought i was the only One who confessed love to customer service," someone else commented.
"Same vibe as the customer service person who recently signed off to me with ":)"," another netizen wrote.
Walmart uses generative and conversational AI for a seamless shopping experience
Walmart has reportedly been harnessing AI to help customers have a more enjoyable shopping experience. According to its website, the retail chain announced Walmart Voice Order in partnership with Google in 2019, in which customers can place orders with conversational commands.
The company has also improved its customer care services with AI by including live chats and chatbots. It also utilizes Generative AI to allow consumers to search for products quickly. GenAI creates a "holistic product offering," enabling people to use "single search prompt" words instead of locating items by name.
In addition to helping customers, the retail company also set up in-store assistants with Ask Sam. According to the company website, the voice assistant helps locate products faster, looks up the prices of the items, and accesses store maps.
Founded in 1962, Walmart has over 10,500 outlets across 19 countries. According to a June 2024 report in Visual Capitalist, it is the largest retailer in the world.
