A car owner's recent video of him shielding his Chevrolet Corvette from Hurricane Milton with plastic covers has gone viral. The footage has captured the attention of over 10.4 million viewers on X since it was uploaded on October 8.
The video shows a man methodically applying layers of what appear to be industrial-grade plastic film to his brand-new Chevrolet Corvette amidst the prediction by experts that Hurricane Milton may be the strongest storm to hit the USA in a century.
Now netizens have taken to the video's comment section to express their opinions about the situation and offer advice to the hard-working man. One X user even said that the car owner could have just driven away the luxury car instead of wrapping it.
"All this dude had to do was just...drive away. Just drive it away. This guy cant even do that", an X user wrote .
Others also shared a similar sentiment.
"Can he not get in the corvette and drive to a safe zone?" asked an X user.
"He would have a better chance if he put the car on a lift/ramp. I feel bad for everyone stuck there," another person commented.
Some people expressed their trust in the car owner's idea and remarked that maybe this technique could work.
"If there's no holes in that plastic it's gonna take some serious flooding /debris to make it thru that. Dude's on to something", commented another one.
"That garage door is definitely hurricane rated, but it ain’t water tight. I think this is brilliant. This is probably actually going to work way better than most people expect," an X user theorised.
"This is one of those things that seems so outlandish that it might actually work lol," an X user remarked.
Some netizens even joked about the whole thing.
"Got that corvette looking like a seafood boil," joked an X user.
"Show that to the insurance agency and his claim will be immediately approved," joked another one.
"This looks like a gift offering to the hurricane…a car wrapped up like a fruit or Easter basket," an X user remarked.
The evacuation process has already begun in the wake of Hurricane Milton
Millions of Floridians have been warned to leave their homes as Hurricane Milton is expected to make landfall on Wednesday night, October 9. As per Newsweek's October 8 article, President Biden described the evacuation as a "matter of life and death."
Furthermore, as per the same Newsweek article, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis warned the residents in Milton's path and said that "time is running out" as the storm is about to make landfall.
Moreover, according to the Weather Channel's October 8 report, on Tuesday, the National Weather Service in Tampa warned that Hurricane Milton would be "the most powerful hurricane to hit Tampa Bay in over 100 years" if it continues on its current path.
In the middle of all this, a local man's efforts to protect his Chevrolet Corvette from Hurricane Milton by wrapping it in plastic sheets has sparked conversations on X and TikTok about preparation and priorities.
Rick Kriseman, the former mayor of St. Petersburg, Florida, told Newsweek that several parking garages in the state were built to protect cars during periods of extreme weather.
"The best way to keep your vehicles safe during a storm with great potential for storm surge is to park it and leave it in a parking garage on the highest covered floor available," Kriseman adviced.
Recently, Hurricane Milton approached Florida's Gulf Coast, bringing strong winds and a storm surge. However, luckily, it had lost some of its power and is now being categorized as Category 3 instead of Category 5. The Weather Channel reported that this is the 10th Category 3 hurricane to hit the U.S. Gulf Coast since 2017.
