Over 6,000 bags of Lay's Classic Potato Chips have been recalled in two cities in the U.S. due to the presence of undisclosed dairy ingredients. According to the firm's website, Frito-Lay, the company behind the production of the popular potato chip brand Lay's, announced a voluntary recall on December 16, 2024.
Frito-Lay acted quickly after receiving a customer alert that they consumed a bag of Lay's that may contain undisclosed dairy. Although the customer who raised the concern experienced no allergic reactions, the firm said that it might be dangerous for consumers who have milk allergies.
The report on the company's website read:
Frito-Lay today issued a recall of a limited number of 13 oz. bags of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips that may contain undeclared milk, after being alerted through a consumer contact. Those with an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the recalled product."
The company has worked together with the Food and Drug Administration to recall the products affected by the dairy contamination.
What are the affected products and states of the product recall?
The Lay's Classic Potato Chips affected in the recall was distributed to a couple of supermarkets, retail stores, and e-commerce distributors in the cities of Oregon and Washington. Consumers may identify if they have the recalled product in their pantries if they purchased it as early as November 3, 2024.
"No allergic reactions related to this matter have been reported to date. No other Lay’s products, flavors, sizes or variety packs are recalled," read the report on Frito-Lay's website.
How to detect if one has the recalled Lay's product?
The total number of bags affected is 6,344, as reported by the company itself. Customers may see a "Guaranteed Fresh" date of February 11, 2025, in the recalled product bags. The affected bags should also have the manufacturing codes 6462307xx or 6463307xx and UPC number 28400-31041.
Frito-Lay has confirmed that no allergic reactions have been reported related to the matter to date. Additionally, the company has not announced that they will issue a refund for customers who have consumed the affected product. However, it should be noted that they are obliged to offer replacement or refund under U.S. law, whatever the company deems fit.
Moreover, Frito-Lay reminded customers that if they happen to have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk, they should not consume the recalled product as it may pose a risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction. Customers should immediately contact health professionals if they experience an allergic reaction and inform Lay's customer service about it.
Consumers with the product described above can contact Frito-Lay Consumer Relations at 1-800-352-4477 (9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. CST, Monday-Friday)," read the report.
What is a product recall?
A product recall is when a food manufacturer, company, or distributor removes a product from sale due to safety concerns. Product recalls may be voluntary or as requested by the Food and Drug Administration.
As shocking as it is, product recalls are not uncommon. Just earlier this year, it was reported that over 1,600 chocolate bars and nearly 79,000 pounds of butter were recalled.
Lay's Classic Potato Chips typically do not contain dairy, but this isn't the first time a recall has happened. In 2023, the company recalled certain bags of Classic Potato Chips due to dairy contamination, which resulted from a mix-up with Sour Cream and Onion chips produced in the same facility, according to a December 18, 2024, report by The Takeout. That same year, Lay's also recalled its Chickpea Veggie Crisps because of dairy contamination from caramel chips, as per Spectrum News 1.
While Frito-Lay did not specify the cause of the most recent recall, allergen recalls are often linked to improper cleaning of factory equipment.
