Frito-Lay, the PepsiCo-owned company has issued a voluntary recall for a limited number of Lays Classic Potato Chips over undeclared milk allergen concerns. When consumed by people with lactose intolerance and milk-related allergies, the recalled chips may pose a risk of severe to life-threatening allergic reactions.
Announced on May 4, 2023, the voluntary recall was initiated after a customer tipped the company about the presence of undeclared milk in the recalled products. Upon investigating the products, the company came to the conclusion that the recalled potato chips may contain undeclared milk from sour cream that is not revealed on the packets. Soon after, the company issued a nationwide recall to ensure customer safety.
As of now, neither Frito-lay nor the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received reports of any allergic reactions or fatalities with regard to consumption of the allergen-contaminated products. Milk allergen-contaminated food is linked to severe and life-threatening allergic reactions in people with lactose intolerance or milk allergies.
Symptoms of such allergies may include - tingling in the mouth, dizziness, abdominal pain, light-headedness, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and fainting. People with high sensitivity towards milk allergens could also be at risk of experiencing life-threatening symptoms such as anaphylaxis attacks, which require immediate medical attention.
Individuals who experience any of these symptoms following the consumption of the recalled product are advised to consult a doctor or visit a medical care center at the earliest.
Recalled Lays Potato Chips were sold in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire
The voluntary recall affects at least two variants of Lays Classic Potato Chips produced by Frito-Lay, a PepsiCo-owned company. Packed in the iconic yellow labeled poly-bags, the recalled chips were distributed to groceries, club stores, and convenience stores across the country.
Packed in 146 bags – of 13 oz. and 15 5/8 oz. - the recalled Potato Chips were sold throughout stores in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. The recalled products that contain undeclared milk allergens posing severe to life-threatening allergic reaction risk, were available in the market starting April 16, 2023.

Customers with milk-related allergies or lactose intolerance are strictly advised not to consume the recalled potato chips as they may pose allergic reaction risks. They can either dispose of the recalled product safely in a closed bin or return it to the store of purchase for a full refund.
