Singer and actress Ariana Grande recently addressed rumors of her playing Audrey Hepburn in a potential biopic. During her carpet interview with Entertainment Tonight on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, the Wicked star was asked if she was "manifesting" playing Audrey just like she did Glinda (from Wicked).
The interviewer was referencing Grande's tweet from 2011 where she claimed she would portray the said character. The singer replied:
"Oh my goodness, oh my goodness - I have no idea. That would have to be done so well and so perfectly and have to be - I don’t know."
As the news went viral, internet users were quick to react. One commented:
"And not her playing Sudrey. Lily Collins is the only one!"
Many shared their suggestions for who could play Audrey Hepburn. Here are some comments seen under @PopCrave's post on X:
"Uh Anne Hathaway > Ariana Grande. Hands down," a fan suggested.
"dont @ me but lily collins is right there," another wrote.
"not ariana panicking at the thought of playing her," a user stated.
Others liked the idea that Ariana Grande would play the actress, noting the similarities in their looks.
"they would be dumb not to cast her for all the publicity alone this would get," one commented.
"I see no one doing the role instead of Ariana. She'll perfectly embody her," another added.
"whether you want ariana to portray her or not — you have to admit that she really does look like her," one noted.
"I love the 50s, 60s glamour"- Ariana Grande about her look at the National Board of Review Annual Awards Gala
On Wednesday, Ariana Grande attended the National Board of Review Annual Awards Gala. She, along with her Wicked co-star, Cynthia Erivo, received the Creative Collaboration award for their work on the musical Wicked.
Before the award, Entertainment Tonight interviewed the Thank You, Next singer on the red carpet. The reporter pointed out that Grande's look—a pink gown with a ponytail and bangs—resembled something Audrey Hepburn would wear.
"That's liked of the inspiration... Like the golden era of Hollywood, (the) old Hollywood. I love the 50s, 60s glamour, that’s just kind of my favorite—Marilyn, Audrey, it’s just my favorite."
Ariana also noticed that the interviewer wore a green gown (reflecting Cyntia Erivo's character, Elphaba), joking they looked very "Oz-ian" (Wicked is a play based on the Wizard of Oz). She thanked the reporter, telling her the comparison was "very kind."
Ariana Grande also praised Ervio, adding it was wonderful working with her and learning from each other. She also gave a shout-out to the whole cast and crew for the musical's success, calling it a "dream collaboration."
According to the Independent Magazine, fans have been likening Ariana Grande to Audrey Hepburn since the former debuted her new forehead-laid bangs (much like the Breakfast at Tiffany's actress) last week at the Palm Springs Film Festival. In addition to the hair, they believe Grande's demeanor and recent fashion are akin to that of Hepburn.
According to Billboard, an Audrey Hepburn biopic was in the works in a Luca Guadagnino-helmed production with Rooney Mara playing the iconic actress. However, in February 2024, Mara told Deadline that Luca was no longer associated with the project but added the project was "alive." There have been no reports of the project since.
