News details about Luigi Mangione's family have emerged amid his connection to United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson's killing. It has previously been reported that Mangione belonged to a prominent family from Maryland. In an article published on December 12, The Daily Mail exclusively reported that Mangione's family was deeply connected to the healthcare industry.

The family reportedly had been running nursing homes, which were scrutinized over abuse allegations. The suspect's grandfather, Nick Mangione Sr., was a big name in the real estate industry and acquired several country clubs and assisted living facilities. According to The Mail, Luigi Mangione had volunteered in these facilities in his teens.

The Lorien Health Services network was later inherited by Nick's children, including Luigi Mangione's father. The network reportedly promised several amenities like stimulating activities, restaurant-style dining, movie theaters, and beauty spas. As per Medicare data obtained by The Mail, several of these homes reportedly aced criticism and federal fines.

One of these homes, situated in Bel Air, had allegedly faced about 24 health citations over the last six years. An alert for abuse was posted on the Medicare.gov database. The Department of Health and Human Services conducted an inspection in April 2024 and stated:

"[It] failed to ensure that a resident was free from mental and physical abuse."

Other concerning areas which the inspectors reportedly highlighted were quality of life, infection control, and residents' rights. In June 2022, an inspection occurred in one of their homes in Bulle Rock, Maryland. Shortly after, they reportedly had to pay $40,422 as a federal fine. Their home in Columbia similarly paid $24,680 as a fine.

Such frequent penalties and concerns even contributed to an overall Medicare rating of two out of five. The Mail further mentioned that they could obtain data that claimed that the network had to pay $55,192 to the federal government for allegedly violating the Civil Monetary Penalties Law by retaining overpayments.

Luigi Mangione's family has previously made donations to the healthcare industry

Luigi's family didn't just run a series of nursing homes; they were also reportedly involved in the industry as significant donors. According to The New York Post, Nick and his wife Mary were also known to be philanthropists.

The media outlet also reported that a donation of over a million dollars was made to the Greater Baltimore Medical Center by the couple. This reportedly became the place where all of Nicki's grandchildren were born. The facility even then decided to name its obstetrics unit after the prominent Mangione family.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the St. Joseph Medical Center at the University also received huge donations from the Mangione Family Foundation. Luigi Mangione's family further expressed shock at the news about his arrest. His uncle, Jerry O'Keefe, told the New York Post:

"It’s a shock for all of us. I can’t say anymore. The statement summed it up for all of us. We don’t know anything more than what’s been reported in the media."

The family further issued a statement offering condolences to Brian Thompson's family.
