On September 25, 2024, Maye Musk, Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk's mother, corroborated her son's statement that he was not dating Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni. Rumors of Musk and Meloni dating arose after photos of the two amicably chatting at the Atlantic Council’s Global Citizen Awards dinner in Manhattan on September 23 spread on social media.
Elon Musk quickly shut down the rumors, denying any "romantic relationship" between them and clarifying that he had been at the event with his mother.
"I was there with my Mom. There is no romantic relationship whatsoever with PM Meloni," he tweeted.
Maye Musk also confirmed this, adding that she had been at the dinner with Musk and Meloni, following which she returned to the hotel with her son.
She added that she had a wonderful evening at the event and that she also admiringly looked at the Italian PM as a subtle dig at the rumors online
"I was sitting next to Elon. I also looked at Georgia with admiration," Maye Musk tweeted.
Elon Musk presented Georgia Meloni with an award at the event
Elon Musk presented Georgia Meloni with the Global Citizens Award at her request at the event held in Manhattan's Ziegfeld Ballroom. He introduced her as a person who was “authentic, honest and thoughtful” and “someone who is even more beautiful on the inside than she is on the outside."
In response, Meloni praised Elon Musk for his “precious genius" when she accepted her award. The 47-year-old politician, who is Italy's first female prime minister, gave a 15-minute speech about the values of the West.
“The West is a system of values in which the person is central, men and women are equal and free, and therefore the system is democratic and based on the rule of law. I ask and I wonder — are these values we should be ashamed of?” Meloni said in her speech.
Musk and Meloni have previously met twice. They discussed artificial intelligence and the West's declining birthrate when Meloni hosted the tech billionaire at her official residence in Rome in June 2023. Musk also spoke at a political festival held by Meloni's Brothers of Italy party in December 2023.
