On Friday, January 10, Niecy Nash posted videos on Instagram in which she talked about the wildfires around her home in Bell Canyon, where the Kenneth Fire has been raging. In the first video, Nash shared that the evacuation orders in her neighborhood had been lifted for the time being, but their bags were packed in case things changed.
Niecy Nash then talked about the citizens in her neighborhood having caught the person who allegedly started the fire. She said:
"There was citizens in our neighborhood, they caught the person who they believe started the fires near where we are. Very very grateful for that."
Then, discussing survivor's remorse, Niecy Nash broke down into tears, saying:
"My heart is so heavy for people who have lost everything and it's just a hard, hard place to be in... I am overwhelmed and I am grateful. I feel like, in a way, I have survivor's remorse. I'm just so sorry for the people who have lost their homes and are suffering in ways that are unimaginable. I'm definitely keeping you all in my prayers."
Niecy Nash's Instagram post comes shortly after a Fox News article reported a man being in the LA police's custody after being caught by residents near the Kenneth Fire.
Niecy Nash expressed disbelief at the cruelty of human beings in her Instagram video
Having talked about survivor's remorse, Niecy Nash, who was in tears, continued to talk about faith, saying:
"These are trying times. It's hard to believe that human beings can be this cruel... One thing that is for sure is that when you are a person of faith, you believe that there's something better on the other side of this. And that is what I believe and hold on to. That is the thing that will push us forward and will allow us to rise from these ashes."
Per Fox News, the man who was claimed to be an arsonist was captured by a group of Southern Californian residents on Friday.
In a video shared by the news outlet, a man who appears to be holding a torch head and a yellow fuel tank is riding a bicycle in a frenzy as he is chased by a resident, who confronts him. At the same time, he moves around, seemingly trying to deny the accusations of starting the fires.
The news outlet also reported that the man was surrounded and tackled by at least five residents, who then called the cops on him. Police later revealed that the man wasn't a suspect in lighting any fires at the time but was charged with a probation violation.
An LAPD spokesperson told Fox News:
"Today, at 4:32 p.m., a radio call was generated on the 21700 block of Ybarra Road for a possible arson suspect. A male was heard stating a suspect was 'attempting to light a fire'. The suspect is in custody and was transported to Topanga Station. We are continuing our investigation, and we CANNOT confirm any connection to any fire by this suspect at this time."
Meanwhile, a law enforcement source told the same news outlet that finding people who have intentionally set wildfires is not uncommon. They added:
"When you have wind conditions like this, it brings out the serial arsonists, who are sickos."
The situation of the LA wildfires, especially the Palisades fire - which has particularly impacted many Hollywood celebrities - has attracted many looters allegedly looking to steal from their homes after they have evacuated. Authorities have made at least 20 arrests for looting across the county, with residents struggling to hire private security firms to protect their homes and belongings amidst the raging wildfires.
