The Powerpuff Girls live-action series that was under development at The CW saw a sad demise as TV Line recently reported that the network has decided to not proceed with the project. It now-canceled show was a modern take on the beloved superhero animated show Powerpuff Girls, which aired on Cartoon Network from 1998 to 2005 and was distributed by Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution.
The live-action series was supposed to star Chloe Bennet, Dove Cameron, and Yana Perrault as Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup respectively. The trio was supposed to be in their twenties and suffering from an existential crisis over a childhood that they will never get to experience again.
Surprisingly, fans on Twitter were glad that the series was canceled, since most of them were not intrigued by this idea, to begin with.
Hilarious Twitter reactions prove that hardly anyone was excited to watch a Powerpuff Girls live-action series
Alongside Powerpuff Girls, The CW has even decided to drop the ball on the Arrowverse show Justice U, a Zorro series that was supposed to be led by women, an Archie spinoff titled Jake Chang, and every other show former CW president Mark Pedowitz greenlit.
In a conversation with TVLine, current President of Entertainment, Brad Schwartz, revealed:
"We’ve already given those back to the studios so they’re free to develop those and sell them anywhere."
The show's pilot episode was, infact, filmed in early 2021, however the network recently decided to not convert it into a full-blown series. This is what Former CW President Mark Pedowitz's reason was for this move:
"Sometimes things miss, and this was just a miss. Tonally, it might have felt a little too campy. It didn’t feel as rooted in reality as it might have. But again, you learn things when you test things out. And in this case, we felt like, ‘Let’s take a step back and go back to the drawing board."
Here is how fans on Twitter responded to the news under the original post shared by Discussing Film:
What is Powerpuff Girls about?
According to Rotten Tomatoes, the synopsis of the iconic animated series reads as:
"Accidentally created in a lab by Professor Utonium, superpowered sisters Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup regularly save Townsville from evildoers such as Mojo Jojo, the Gangreen Gang, and Him. Blossom is the self-proclaimed leader of the trio, Bubbles is the cute one, and Buttercup is the toughest one."
The show was created by Craig McCracken and narrated by Tom Kenny.
