Olivia Rodrigo's note on the anniversary of her first album, which seemed to hint at a new album, sent her fans into a frenzy. Many took to social media to express their excitement and joy at the hint. One netizen exclaimed they had survived the "Rodrigo drought." Others expressed their shock and surprise at the post and some also speculated on the date the new album would be announced.

Olivia Rodrigo released her debut studio album, Sour, on May 21, 2021. The album explores the themes of negative emotions that mainstream culture shames women for having. It was conceptualized as an all-rounder album, the singer stated in an exclusive interview with Nylon magazine.

She told the publication that she wanted it to be "super versatile," and that she wanted to be an intersection between genres. The genres she mentioned including mainstream pop, folk music, and alternative rock. The singer also noted that she loved the songwriting, the "lyricism," and the melodies of folk music.

The deja vu singer went on to say that apart from folk music, she loved the tonality of alt-rock and was "obsessed with pop and pop artists." She added that she was going to take all of these influences and inspiration and make something she liked.

Her versatile approach to the album worked. The album peaked as a chart-topper on a number of major charts. This included the Billboard 200 album chart as well as the Australian, Canadian, Croatian, Swedish, Spanish, and Kiwi album charts.

Olivia Rodrigo won the Best Pop Vocal Album, Best New Artist, and Best Pop Solo Performance awards at the 2022 Grammy Awards for the album. She also won the International Album of the Year at the 2022 Juno Awards.

The singer-songwriter and actress is also known for playing the role of Nini Salazar-Roberts in the mockumentary musical drama series High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. The series premiered on Disney+ on November 8, 2019. The actress won the Favorite Favorite Female TV Star (Kids) award for her role in the show at the 2022 Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards.
