X recently dropped a new update, in which the way tweets are formatted has been changed. According to a post uploaded by @PopBase on December 5, in the new format, the view count of the tweet will now be displayed on top of it, instead of the bottom, where it previously used to be.
Another change that came with the update was that users could no longer see the exact date and time of when a tweet was posted. The second change in particular created an uproar on the social media platform, with netizens taking to its comment section to express their disappointment.
Some netizens criticized every new change that came with the updates on the platform.
"I don’t even care about the views part, but removing the exact date and time gotta be one of the worst updates this app has ever gotten honestly." - commented an X user.
"Like if no one asked for this change" - posted another one.
"Impressive how bad almost every change has been for this platform" - wrote a third user.
Meanwhile, other netizens pointed out that the new update made X's layout similar to that of Instagram's Threads.
"So if someone revives an old tweet, we can't tell???" - replied a fourth X user.
"so basically just like threads??" - commented a fifth user.
"What was the point of removing when a tweet gets posted online?!" - wrote a sixth user.
The post, as of now, has since gone viral, receiving over 160K views, 3K likes, and 1.8K re-shares.
The new X tweet update comes a month after the platform's merch store launch
The latest X update comes a month after the social media platform launched its merch store. Designed for X enthusiasts who would like to display their passion for the platform in their everyday lives, the merch store offers branded clothing and accessories that they can buy online.
So far, the store has only two items on sale - a unisex 3D X logo t-shirt and a trucker hat - both of which are worth $35. However, the online store does state that more merchandise will be dropping soon.
X has undergone many changes since Elon Musk bought the platform in 2022
Ever since Elon Musk purchased X - which was previously called Twitter - in October 2022, a lot of changes have taken place on the social media platform.
Musk bought Twitter for $44 billion, after which he immediately fired its CEO, CFO, general counsel, and the head of legal, trust, and safety.
A few days later, he delisted the company from the New York Stock Exchange - an act that liberated him from having to listen to shareholders and boards while making decisions.
After Musk's takeover, thousands of the company's employees were also laid off. Following the mass layoffs, users started facing frequent troubles with misinformation and AI-generated content.
In November 2022, Musk rolled out a $7.99 monthly subscription for users who wished to have a blue checkmark verification badge on their profiles. The subscription eliminated the platform's original verification system, boosting the spread of misinformation on Twitter.
In July 2023, Elon Musk announced that he was officially changing the name of the platform from Twitter to X, getting rid of the platform's iconic blue bird logo. Two months later, X's annual report revealed that the platform's global traffic went down by 14% in the last year.
X also announced in September 2024 that it will soon remove the option to block public accounts on the platform. This means that even if a user blocks a public account, that will only limit their message conversations - they'll continue to see the posts made from the account.
