The Hawk Tuah Girl launched her memecoin, $HAWK, on Solana on December 4. The coin quickly reached a market cap of nearly $500 million, but within 20 minutes, its value plummeted to $60 million, as confirmed by Solana on X.
Social media users have expressed shock over the drop. Crypto News reported that the 88% decline was likely caused by the coin being "sniped," where large investors buy up most of the tokens, leaving others with less access and increasing their risk.
The publication also reported that certain X users opined that crypto users likely took part in “rug pulling,” a scam where developers suddenly withdraw from a project, leading to the token’s price plummeting.
The Hawk Tuah Girl explained in an interview with Fortune, which was published on December 4, that the memecoin was “not just a cash grab.” She said that she wanted to change the public’s view on crypto. Her manager Jonnie Forster said in a press statement:
“Launching the $HAWK token creates a fun, secure and innovative way for Hailey to get even closer to her community. It not only empowers her fans but also eliminates the confusion posed by scammers who are constantly releasing unauthorized coins without approvals of her name and likeness.”
Netizens have since taken to social media to respond to the controversy with one netizen noting:
Several others expressed disappointment over the occurrence with comments online reading:
“She’s gonna have to Talk Tuah judge soon,” an X user said.
“She can spit behind bars- sure the guards would enjoy,” another internet user said.
“I wonder if she will be held accountable or the blame will be pushed towards the “dev” who pressed deploy,” a platform user said.
Other netizens took to the social networking site to state that the Hawk Tuah Girl can go to jail for the crypto crash. Comments online read:
“She’s going to jail 100%,” an X user said.
“Jail-Tua,” a platform user said.
“Rug tuah,” another netizen commented.
This is not the first time Hailey Welch has dabbled in the memecoin world. She had previously distributed free tokens to her social media followers during a campaign held between November 26 and December 2. Meanwhile, other reactions read:
“She just hawk tuahed 1M dollars from our pockets,” a netizen stated.
“If she’s actually behind this, she deserves jail time. Something tells me this wasn’t her brain child,” an internet user said.
The Hawk Tuah Girl released a statement following the crypto crash
On December 4, Medium revealed that Hailey Welch released a public statement hours after the memecoin’s collapse. She said:
“$HAWK was always meant to be a fun, community driven project. I had no control over the token’s management.”
In a tweet, she also explained- “Team hasn’t sold one token and not 1KOL was given 1 free token. We tried to stop snipers as best we could through high fee’s in the start of launch on @MeteoraAG Fee’s have now been dropped.”
Hailey Welch gained mainstream popularity after she appeared in a Tim & Dee TV interview where she was asked to name a move in bed that would drive a man crazy, to which she delivered the now-famous “Hawk Tuah” impression.
