The MTV Video Music Awards were held on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, and saw singer Chappell Roan make her debut as a performer. She won the award for Best New Artist during the event and also performed her latest single, Good Luck Babe!
However, Chappell Roan's debut at the VMAs also saw her have a dramatic encounter with the paparazzi on the red carpet. A person from the singer's team was fixing her outfit, a velvet robe with a gauzy gown, as paparazzi waited for her by the carpet. That was when a photographer seemingly yelled at her to "shut the f**k up." However, the reason behind the photographer yelling at her was unknown at the time of writing this article.
When the Hot To Go singer heard what the photographer said, she didn't hold back and reacted quickly by yelling back at them.
“You shut the f**k up! Don’t! Not, me b**ch,” Roan responded.
Someone in the background was also heard saying, “Tell ‘em girl.” Entertainment Tonight managed to exclusively capture the video, which soon went viral on social media and amassed millions of views. The video received diverse reactions from fans, and while some stated that Chappell Roan was behaving unprofessionally, others defended her for standing up for herself.
Some claimed that the singer was behaving like an "attention seeker," others claimed that she looked like "someone who just became famous."
“She’s been famous for like five seconds and thinks that allows her to talk to people anyway she wants ew,” an X user said.
“Attention seeker,” another platform user said.
“She looks like someone who just became famous,” an X user commented.
“it’s giving karen lowkey,” another platform user said.
However, not all netizens were against Chappell's actions, they said that she had "every right to snap back." Others appreciated her, calling her a "national treasure," as some called out the photographer for yelling at her.
“She had every right to snap back. Celebrities don’t have to sit there, and take it when people are rude to them even though it’s good for PR,”” an X user said.
“Chappell they could never make me hate you,” another netizen commented.
“Protect this national treasure,” another platform user said.
“why do entitled men think they can speak to a woman like that… GET HIM OUT OF THERE,” an X user said.
“I’ve never loved Chappell Roan more,” another platform user said.
“It’s quite overwhelming and quite scary": Chappell Roan clarified MTV VMAs red carpet debacle
After the VMAs, Chappell Roan spoke to an Entertainment Tonight reporter and revealed that she was "anxious" about her red carpet appearance. She added that the photographer's behavior didn't help, leading to her defending herself from somebody who shouted at her.
Roan said that the red carpet was "horrifying" for someone who has a "lot of anxiety around people yelling" at them. The singer noted that she yelled back because no one got to yell at her like that.
“It’s quite overwhelming and quite scary," the singer said about the experience.
The singer, whose real name is Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, asserted her boundaries on social media in August 2024. She shared her experience of dealing with certain fans who reportedly harassed her.
Roan said online that she had been "in too many non-consensual physical and social interactions," adding that she needed to remind people that women didn't "owe you sh*t."
“I chose this career path because I love music and art and honoring my inner child, I do not accept harassment of any kind because I chose this path, nor do I deserve it,” Roan said.
Chappell Roan won the award for Best New Artist at the 2024 VMA, and in her speech, she thanked "all the drag queens that inspire" her, as well as the LGBTQ+ community. The singer also had a message for "all the queer kids in the Midwest," stating that she sees and understands them as she was one of them.
And don’t ever let anyone tell you that you can’t be exactly who you want to be, b****!” the singer said.
The 26-year-old singer also performed her latest single, Good Luck Babe! at the awards function. Multiple dancers surrounded the singer as she performed the song wearing what looked like fake amor and her bright red hair.
Chappell Roan is expected to launch her European tour in London. She will then perform at the 2024 Austin City Limits Music Festival on October 6, 2024, and October 13, 2024.
