Luigi Mangione, who is suspected of killing United HealthCare CEO Brian Thompson, can reportedly buy an mp3 player and songs through jail commissary. Citing "sources with direct knowledge," TMZ shed light on Mangione's life behind bars, on Friday, December 27, 2024.
Earlier this month, Pennsylvania authorities arrested Mangione for allegedly fatally shooting Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel and fleeing. He has since been indicted on 11 counts including first-degree murder in furtherance of terrorism. He is currently being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.
Per TMZ, while old Luigi may buy an MP3 player for his entertainment, he needs money in his account. Inmates have a limit of spending $350 a month (an additional $100 is added during holidays).
As the news spread, internet users were quick to react. One wrote:
"Someone buy brat for him."
Many discussed how they could add money in Luigi's account, while others inquired about what conditions the move implied. Here are some comments as seen on X:
"what’s his cashapp?" one questioned.
"Does the Mp3 player come loaded with songs or does he have to download them himself? And does it have an app where it can buy them or would he also need a PC," another wondered.
"Yeah retty common thing," a person remarked.
Some discussed what songs Luigi Mangione should listen to as the discussion carried on.
"we need to raise enough money to buy him the My Chemical Romance discography," one user commented.
"Babyshark for when he’s in solitary.," another joked.
"he deserves Chromatica," a Gaga fan wrote.
Luigi Mangione entered a not guilty plea on December 23
Per TMZ, Luigi Mangione has been under "administrative segregation," which means he has been held separately from the general population due to the requirements of higher security. According to the publication, authorities claim he has become infamous for mudering UHC CEO and is susceptible to target by fellow inmates.
Notably, while he is being held in a cell alone, Luigi is still around a group of immates. He is allowed an hour a day outside of his cell in a recreation pen, which is a large cage where he can remain uncuffed. According to TMZ, there is a cage with a stationary bike and another with basketball.
According to a December 2024 report by Cultura Colectiva, netizens have speculated on Luigi Mangione's groomed look when he recently appeared in court to enter his plea (Mangione pleaded not guilty on December 23). Many allege that it comes from internal prison dynamics.
According to X user @leahmcelrath, in-prison services like barbershop and laundry are controlled by inmates. Thus a well groomed appearence could mean that it was a message from "prisoners to guards in his future facility not to abuse (Luigi) because he is being looked after."
During the plea hearing, Luigi Mangione's lawyer Karen Friedman Agnifilo, raised concerns about her client's rights to a fair trial being violated due to politicization of the case, noting that "public officals" were making "prejudiced" statements. She criticized NYC Mayor Eric Adams for using Luigi as a "political fodder."
Luigo Mangione is set to next appear in court in February 2025.
