The suspected shooter of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson's murder, Luigi Mangione, is an Ivy League graduate and allegedly harbors disdain towards the medical community. He's considered a "strong person of interest" in Brian Thompson's murder, and New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a press conference on Monday:
"Officers recovered a handwritten document that speaks to both his [Mangione] motivation and mindset."
The document Tisch was referring to includes three handwritten pages with quotes that Mangione reportedly posted on his Goodreads account, per the NY Post. These quotes were allegedly inspired by the infamous "Unabomber," Ted Kaczynski, who terrorized the country around two decades ago.
NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny added on Monday that the suspected shooter appeared to have "some ill will toward corporate America."
Per the NY Post, Luigi Mangione lost both his grandparents, his grandmother in 2013 and his grandfather in 2017. His distaste for the healthcare industry is likely because of its treatment of his ailing relatives. NYC Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed at a press conference on Monday, December 9, that authorities have arrested Luigi Mangione. However, his current charge is gun possession and had not yet been charged with UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson's murder.
After Thomson was fatally ambushed outside of a Hilton hotel in midtown Manhattan on December 4, the NYC Police Department launched an extensive manhunt to find the suspect. Per the surveillance footage from the incident, authorities had some intel on the shooter's clothing and the weapon used.
On Monday, Tisch mentioned that Mangione was arrested after a McDonalds employee called the cops because he looked suspicious. During his arrest, cops reportedly found several fake IDs from him. It allegedly included a fake ID from New Jersey that matched the name of the suspected shooter used to check into a hostel in New York days before the murder.
The name on the fake ID was listed as "Mark Rosario," a 26-year-old resident of Maplewood, per NBC New York. He also reportedly carried a US passport with him as well as a "ghost gun" that is similar to the one used in Thompson's shooting last week. Kenny further mentioned details about the weapon found in Luigi Mangione's possession, saying:
"The information we're getting from Altoona is that the gun appears to be a ghost gun and may have been made on a 3D printer... He was in possession of a ghost gun that had the capability of firing 9 mm round and a suppressor."
Cops also reportedly found clothes that matched what the gunman wore during the assassination during Mangione's arrest, added the commissioner.
