On July 15, 2024, Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy took to X to recount how he was almost lost to the sea after he took his mother on a boat ride and lost power in the water. In his post, Portnoy also thanked the US Coast Guard for rescuing them off the coast of Nantucket on Monday.
"We almost lost Captain Dave to mother ocean today. Thank you to the #uscoastguard for saving Captain Dave's life," he posted on X.
The official First Coast Guard District X account replied to Portnoy's post, saying they sent their well wishes to the businessman's famous rescue pitbull, Miss Peaches.
A US Coast Guard spokesperson released a statement following Dave Portnoy's rescue to WFXT that said:
"Sector Southeastern New England received a report from U.S Coast Guard Station Brant Point of an approximately 28 ft pleasure craft belonging to Dave Portnoy that broke free of its mooring in Nantucket Harbor and was drifting through the area. Station Brant Point diverted from training and towed the vessel to its mooring.
"We are glad that he used distressed signals and applaud the Good Samaritan for having a VHF radio ready to hail the Coast Guard."
They cautioned other boat owners to carry communication devices with them at all times when heading out into the ocean, adding that it was always better to be over-prepared than under-prepared.
"No power, no radio, no anchor, no nothing" — Dave Portnoy about being trapped at sea
Dave Portnoy wanted to show off his boat to his mother on Monday but ended up stranded in the ocean as his vessel lost power. Recounting the story on social media, Portnoy, who referred to himself as 'Captain Dave,' said:
“Captain Dave unhooked himself to the buoy before he turned the boat on to make sure the boat wasn’t dead. Well no power, no radio, no anchor, no nothing. Heavy heavy winds. Next thing you know Captain Dave is lost at sea."
Dave Portnoy added that the winds were so strong that they propelled his boat out of the harbor, and he had to keep steering the vessel to avoid collision with ships. He also fired a distress signal using a flare, but no one noticed. He said that a girl on a row boat finally came near his vessel. He called the Coast Guard using her working radio.
"Coast Guard came, four burley dudes. Thankfully the Coast Guard, God bless their souls, tied me up, brings me back — Captain Dave lives to tell another tale," he said.
Dave Portnoy also said that the adventure has put him off from going into the ocean for a while, adding that he may never go in the boat again.
Dave Portnoy's sea adventure came weeks after the Barstool Sports founder revealed that he beat cancer. In the June 20 episode of his BFFs podcast, Portnoy revealed this to co-host Brianna LaPaglia after she asked him about a scar on his neck.
He didn't elaborate on it much. However, he took to social media the next day to reveal that the cancer wasn't the "serious kind."
