Popular Black-owned natural hair care brand Mielle Organics has lately become embroiled in controversy. It all started when customers started to complain about their experiences after using some of the brand's items. Many users claimed that Mielle Organics' products have damaged their hair and caused hair loss.
Many even stated that after using some of their products, like Rosemary Mint Scalp & Hair Strengthening Oil for an extended period of time, they discovered their hair in clumps. The controversy gained even more limelight after hair influencer and licensed cosmetologist @laura_beautycoach condemned the company and its founder, Monique Rodriguez, on TikTok for "selling out" to Procter & Gamble (P&G) in January 2023.
However, following severe backlash, Monique recently took to Instagram to allege that one of her competitors reportedly paid the influencer a significant amount to spread misinformation about her brand. Stating the same, she took to TikTok on November 23 and said:
“I've always been very transparent with you all and in this situation, it is no different. As many of you have been seeing that my Yale has been buzzing in the media lately and some of you have stood up and shown support like true loyal maidens and mavericks and I just really truly appreciate it.”
She then added:
“But here's the thing, we recently discovered that the original TikTok creator who sparked all of those rumors about my Yale products causing hair loss and falsely claiming that the rosemary mint oil formula has changed, that creator has been paid by one of our competitors.”
The Mielle CEO requested her fans and followers to pay no heed to the rumors
During the same TikTok video, which was later uploaded by Instagram users like @its_onsite and @thejasminebrand on November 23, the CEO of Mielle further said that the creator, who allegedly spread false information about her brand, also reportedly earned a commission to promote a competitor's product.
She continued:
“So you know what they say, when they go low, we go high and out of respect for everyone involved… We try to handle this situation finally, but it has reached a point where I feel it's important to be transparent with you all…”
Monique then alleged that the original false video has since been removed because according to her, people deserve to know the truth and they deserve to understand that there were hidden motives behind the misinformation spreading on social media.
The Mielle CEO went on to say:
“So it is very disheartening because I have always operated with a spirit of believing that there is room for everyone to win. But unfortunately, not everyone shares that same belief.”
She further claimed that their products are safe and are based on consistent formulas, sourcing, and processes. The Mielle CEO also alleged that they were reportedly used by millions of satisfied customers every day without a problem. Monique then added:
“So at the end of the day, I'm grateful for all of the support I see y'all out there, standing up for us in the comments, fighting with people in the comments. I appreciate you guys more than you probably ever know.”
Then she urged the fans and followers of Mielle to help her. She also asked them to spread the word and share the message with everyone because for her, the truth matters and she claimed that it's up to her fans now to make sure that the truth is heard.
She concluded:
“And I've always focused on integrity because you can never go wrong with being honest and having integrity. And more importantly, I'm always going to stand on business.”
This new update from the CEO of Mielle came on the heels of her September 7 Instagram video where she asserted that in contrast to the widely circulated rumors, there has been no alteration to the formula of her products. After the P&G acquisition, she also reassured her customers that her engagement in the company and the components of the products had not changed.
Nevertheless, at this point nothing has been proven.
