On August 15, Tinder and Grindr users faced an online dating blackout as the two sites went down for a period of two hours between 9 and 11 a.m. EST. The two are the biggest dating apps in the world and have been crucial to the online dating industry for the last several years.
Founded by Sean Rad, Justin Mateen, and Whitney Wolfe, Tinder is a location-based dating site that follows a 'swipe right' or 'swipe left' control to like or unlike a potential date. The app had over ten million subscribers in 2022 and over 75 million monthly active users.
On the other hand, Grindr is mostly targeted towards gay, bisexual, and transgender people and has become one of the most popular LGBTQIA+ dating apps in the market. As of September last year, Grindr had over 13.5 million active users per month.
The internet has been flooded with hilarious reactions and memes ever since the two apps crashed. Some of the most popular reactions on X (formerly Twitter) are as follows:
"The world is healing," commented one user on X.
"Grindr and tinder both down wtf is going on," declared another.
"first, they came for Grindr and I said nothing because I'm not a Grinder/ Then they came for Tinder and I said nothing because I'm not a Tinder/ then they came for Plenty of Fish, and I had no one left to speak for me," commented someone on X.
Someone on X even compared the dating app outage with an apocalypse and predicted that the next big thing will be the world ending. They commented:
"first grindr, now tinder, what’s next? the world ends?"
"all the dating apps are down?????" questioned another user.
"what is happening with all these std apps," someone hilariously quipped on X.
Some of the other comments are as follows:
"all these apps are down omg they’re taking monkeypox seriously," someone said on X.
"Because they saw Nicki’s profile," joked another.
"no hooks up for anyone today," inferred someone else.
Tinder has turned it's success stories into a short series exclusively for social media
Tinder has recently launched its latest social media campaign, where some of the most popular social media influencers act out the love story of real couples who got together through the app. Called Long Story Short, the series features six true love stories re-enacted by content creators Kendahl Landreth, Mitsy Anderson, Dalia Elizabeth, and others.
The dating app has collaborated with social media agency Movers+Shakers to release the series through eighteen mini TikTok episodes and six long-form episodes on Instagram. For instance, one episode features a woman going to a psychic and getting the prediction that her dream woman will be obsessed with motorbikes and will have a tattoo sleeve.
She eventually ends up finding her dream girl and she is exactly how the psychic described her. The angsty romance, the concoction of so many emotions and a generous helping of heartwarming moments, make the episode one of the best ones in the entire series.
Long Story Shorts launched on August 9 on Instagram and TikTok.
