On Monday, September 2, 2024, TikToker Neta Murphy went viral after showcasing her peculiar croissant lamp that was bought from Temu. The social media user left internet users stunned after she revealed that the item gifted to her by her sister was surrounded by “hundreds of ants” after she arrived from work on a hot day. It was later discovered that the item was made from a real French pastry.
In a video that has amassed over three million views, Neta Murphy revealed that she received the Temu product as a gift from one of her sisters. The surface of the croissant lamp appeared to be structurally damaged, as one could notice a tiny hole on the item.
Understandably, Murphy found it strange to find ants surrounding the item. There would be no reason for them to be surrounding the lamp, which was just shaped like a foot item. Eventually, Murphy wondered,
“If this is a f**king literal, real, croissant.”
The TikTok user who goes by the username of @froginahatgirl then wondered how the item managed to get shipped a long way if it was likely edible. She then revealed that it was “covered in resin.”
The TikToker then poked at the lamp and said,
“it lowkey looks like a f**king croissant under there… Hang on."
She then proceeded to snap the item down to the middle, where one could also hear a cracking. She went on to say:
“Dude like… that looks like a f**king croissant. Are you actually joking me? Like that looks like a f**king pastry. Look at the crumbs. What the actual f**k Temu?”
Netizens could see flakes and crumbs fall to the ground. She then took a bite out of the item and small crunches could be heard as well. Her eyes immediately brightened, and she flashed a smile and said,
“It’s literally f**king food.”
Many have since taken to the internet to express their amazement, with one person saying:

Several others expressed similar sentiments and could also not believe that the TikTok user bit into the item. Comments online read:

Although this is the first time the organization has found themselves in such a controversy, they have garnered immense backlash for producing fast fashion items in the past, alongside allegedly breaching human rights laws. Meanwhile, other reactions read:

South Korean authorities discovered that Temu items contained a concerning amount of toxic chemicals
In August, it was revealed that Seoul officials found Temu sandals containing lead in the insoles of the item, 11 times more than its permissible limit. Officials asked the organization to remove the item from sale.
The lead discovery was made after Seoul officials conducted an inspection on 144 products sold from AliExpress, Shein, and Temu.
After the discovery made headlines, Temu released a statement with AFP saying:
“Upon receiving notice from the Seoul city government, we immediately launched an internal investigation. We have swiftly removed these product listings from our global marketplace and are enhancing our systems and guidance to merchants to ensure they comply with safety standards and local regulations."
Meanwhile, the organization has also been accused of a number of unethical practices, including data leaks, violating privacy rules, stealing designs, and copyrighting images, among other concerns.
