An Amazon delivery driver left dozens of packages unattended on the side of a woods in Massachusetts on Saturday, December 21, ahead of Christmas, as per Fox Business. The bags were retrieved by Lakeville Police on Sunday.
The individual, whose name wasn't disclosed, was identified as a female delivery agent. She later reported to Lakeville Police, claiming to have abandoned the bags out of stress due to the holiday shipping rush.
Police did not press any charges on the delivery agent, explaining the matter was up to the company to resolve internally. The news prompted wild reactions online.
"They fled the scene of the Prime", joked one X user, referring to Amazon's paid subscription service.
"Well now you’re gonna be even more stressed after you lose your job", wrote another.
Some people sympathized with the delivery agent.
"Bad move but yeah these package workers are under a hell of a lot of pressure this time of year", said one person.
"Sad that this happened but they are also some of the hardest workers during the holidays", one more chimed in.
A few others acknowledged it could be stressful to deliver packages while there's a rush. However, they explained it was wrong to abandon those packages on the road as Christmas was right around the corner and customers were likely waiting for those deliveries to reach them before the festivities began.
"Dang. I understand being overwhelmed & stressed, but ya don't abandoning packages families are waiting on for the holidays. Not cool", opined one person.
"A driver did that in a town close to me, but it was just a few packages. The lady that found them is reporting to Amazon. That’s just mean to do that with Christmas presents arriving", commented another.
Some wrote the delivery agent could have called her manager or coworkers and asked for help if she felt stressed.
"That driver could have just called her dispatcher and ask for a rescue if she was stressed", suggested another.
Around 80 Amazon packages were retrieved from the tote bags ditched by the delivery driver
Shawn Robert, a sergeant with the Lakeville Police Department, who was patrolling the wooded area in Massachusetts, chanced upon three large tote bags on Sunday around 2 am.
In bodycam footage released by the police, some of the boxes were found on the ground after supposedly falling out of the totes. The sergeant could be heard reporting to the station and asking someone to meet him at the location as the bags wouldn’t fit in his car.
Once the bags were brought to the station, police counted nearly 80 packages. On Monday, the delivery driver visited the Lakeville Police Station and informed them about abandoning the packages on the road around 7 pm on Saturday. The packages were returned to a nearby Amazon distribution center in Plymouth County's Middleborough.
Lakeville Police Chief Matthew Perkins said in a statement:
"At this time, we are not seeking criminal charges and are considering this a human resources matter for Amazon."
The incident happened days after Teamsters delivery drivers working for Amazon went on a walkout in four US states over wages and labored hours.
