A mermaid statue in Italy has been gaining attention ever since pictures of it have been circulating online. The controversial debate stems from the statue in southern Italy having a curvy figure. "Il Mare" (2023) was installed in Monopoli's Rita Levi-Montalcini Square, which is reportedly only a short distance from the newly constructed children's park.
According to the Monopoli Times, students from an art high school created the statue to honor Rita Levi-Montalcini, a late Italian senator and Nobel laureate. Several critics also argued that a mermaid could not have a human backside and a fishtail at the same time. Several users online referred to her body type as "provocative."
Netizens turn to Twitter to joke about the mermaid statue in Italy
Since late April, residents of the southern Italy neighborhood and the larger population of Italians have been caught in an intense debate. The question is whether the curvy mermaid statue is an appropriate art display due to the venue being close to kids' square park.
When the picture of the structure went viral on social media, some users expressed their perplexity about the statue and its appearance. Other users ridiculed the entire debate itself and commented on how it was a fictional creature, and no one had an accurate vision of it.
A few users turned the entire discussion into a memefest and commented on the mermaid statue with hilarious jokes, gifs, and memes.
"The debate aroused by the Mermaid is welcome": IISS Luigi Russo art high school principal
"Il Mare" is one of the several installments of a series commissioned by the Monopoli mayor for the local Luigi Russo art school in the light of a town redevelopment project.
Adolfo Marciano, principal of the IISS Luigi Russo art high school that curated and produced the statue, told Fox News Digital in a statement:
"The debate aroused by the Mermaid is welcome, as long as it is about such issues like the freedom of artistic expression or the remains of an ancient and out-of-the-time way of looking at the female (or male) body."
Adolfo Marciano, the head teacher, said that the students thought of the idea themselves after being tasked with creating a sea-themed project for the public square.
The fictional creature's crossed arms hoisted up her exceptionally large breasts. On the other hand, her backside is prominently defined and similar to what some users call the "Kardashian style."
Italian actress Tiziana Schiavarelli said the residents were right to express concern over the statue. She said:
"It looks like a mermaid with two silicone breasts and, above all, a huge *ss never seen before on a mermaid. At least not any I know."
American actor Whoopi Goldberg voiced her opinion during a segment on The View and said that the statue "got a booty." She ridiculed people for making it a big deal and claimed it shouldn't be controversial because the creature is "not real."
Goldberg added that she believes kids wouldn't think, "Ooh, she's sexy." This happened just before the hosts of The View jumped into an argument on how the creature could have a backside and a fishtail. Another host expressed their surprise that the controversy happened in Italy, where there is "so much naked art all over the place."
