CBS' S.W.A.T. is not getting called off. This U-turn comes just two days after the channel's decision to annul the beloved show sent fans, media, and the industry in shock. While overturning the cancelation, CBS and Sony, the co-producers of S.W.A.T., issued a joint statement.

It read that they “have reached an agreement” to hand over a seventh and final season to the TV cop series after listening “to our viewers and their outpouring of passion” for the same.

The statement added that season 7 will have 13 episodes and is slated to hit the network in the 2023-2024 broadcast year. The count of episodes for the forthcoming installment is way less than its preceding seasons, but fans are glad that the show hasn’t been killed off unceremoniously, as reported earlier by the pop culture portal Discussing Film.

S.W.A.T. hit CBS on November 2, 2017, and is currently in its sixth season. The ongoing edition has 22 episodes and will air its finale on May 19.

The 21st and penultimate episode, Forget Shorty, is scheduled to air on May 12, 2023. One of the top-rated shows on CBS, the procedural action drama has been developed by Aaron Rahsaan Thomas and Shawn Ryan.

On Friday, May 5, CBS dropped the bomb that it’s canceling S.W.A.T. after the sixth season and that the season finale, Legacy, will also be the series finale. Reacting to this, exec producer/showrunner Ryan rued that “economic conversations” are given importance “over what viewers really want to watch.”

Meanwhile, Shemar Moore, who plays the lead character of Sergeant II Daniel Harrelson on the show, said pretty furiously:

“I don’t think we’re done. CBS is either gonna wake up and realize they made a mistake. Sony is gonna do their math and realize that this is not the right move.”

Now that the cancelation has been overturned, elated fans took to Twitter to express how the show deserved a "proper send-off" and shouldn't have ended abruptly. Check out some of these tweets below:

S.W.A.T. is one of the rare TV offerings where the lead is a Black man. Also, the fact that it has always maintained steady ratings and still was getting off CBS’ roster drove many angry. It centers around the LAPD (Los Angeles Police Department) Sergeant Daniel "Hondo" Harrelson.

How the “locally born and bred” former Marine leads his team of highly skilled officers to solve the crimes forms the rest of the plot. The show is an expanded version of a 2003 film and a 1975 TV series.

The penultimate episode of S.W.A.T. season 6, Forget Shorty, will hit CBS on May 12, at 8/7c.
