On July 23, 2024 a hydrothermal explosion took place in the Yellowstone National Park, USA around 10 am local time. The eruption happened near the Black Diamond Pool and ripped through the Biscuit Basin thermal area.

Fortunately, no life was harmed during the blast as USA Today reported. However, it left the boardwalk ruined. The video of the explosion at Yellowstone National Park has now garnered severe traction online.

First shared by Vlada March on Facebook, the video showed visitors (both locals and tourists) running from the area following the eruption to look for shelter, while debris and hot water went flying around. One visitor was heard saying in the clip, “Jesus!” as another one screamed, “Back up, back up!” A person asked everyone to "Run!"

In the wake of this now-viral footage being circulated across social media platforms, people are sharing diverse reactions. For instance, in the comment section of a post uploaded by a popular weather reporter and storm chaser, Colin McCarthy, an X user wrote that the USA needs less of such natural calamities this year.

“Okay, this season of USA needs to chill."

Several others joined in the conversation on X. Some users predicted that the end was near and the Yellowstone area was a time-sensitive bomb.

“People forget that Yellowstone Park is ultimately a ticking time bomb,” another netizen wrote.
“I’m just going to laugh at everything from now on until the world ends or not,” one person wrote.
“Supervolcano from the top rope,” another individual wrote.

While some users pointed out that such hydrothermal explosions were a precursor to volcanic eruptions, others did not take the eruption seriously and joked that Mentos caused it.

“Does anyone have super volcano eruption on their 2024 bingo card?” a person asked.
“Who threw the mentos in?” a user asked.
“Someone just threw a mento in there,” another person wrote.

Others weighed in claiming that it was induced by climate change.

“Thanks, climate change deniers!!!!” a person wrote.
“I wonder if climate change made it worse,” another person wrote.

A similar explosion at Yellowstone’s Biscuit Basin took place in 2009

On Tuesday, a small hydrothermal explosion took place in the Yellowstone National Park’s Biscuit Basin thermal area, located 2.1 miles northwest of Old Faithful. The blast reportedly originated near the Black Diamond Pool, as per the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The area has now been temporarily closed to visitors until geologists complete their investigation. Meanwhile, Yellowstone National Park stated in their press release that such hydrothermal and geothermal eruptions were “relatively common” in the area, and were caused by water suddenly and quickly turning into steam underground.

A similar explosion like the one that happened on Tuesday took place in Biscuit Basin on May 17, 2009. Not only that but earlier this year, another small blast occurred near the Norris Geyser Basin on April 15, which was recorded by the monitoring devices. Before that, Porkchop Geyser in Norris Geyser Basin erupted in 1989.

Meanwhile, the Yellowstone authorities have assured that Tuesday’s explosion was not a premonition of a volcanic eruption, claiming that it continued to remain “at normal background levels of activity.” USGS has also seconded the opinion.
