Several X users have recently claimed that ChatGPT could not generate the name David Mayer in its responses. They presented screenshots of their respective interactions with the AI chatbot, where ChatGPT stated it was unable to write the name for some unknown reason.
Users reported that regardless of how they structured their questions to get the desired results, the chatbot refused to mention the name. Instead, ChatGPT responded with an error message in red that read:
“I'm unable to produce a response.”
The chatbot also immediately locked the text box where users input their queries.
One X user referred to ChatGPT as a "puppetmaster," stating:
"We have found the puppetmaster."
Netizens speculated David Mayer de Rothschild, a 46-year-old British environmentalist, adventurer, and film producer, was the person in question. He is the son of Sir Evelyn de Rothschild and Victoria Lou Schott and is an heir to England's Rothschild banking family fortune.
Some theories suggested that the Rothschild family might have gone through legal proceedings to restrict ChatGPT from discussing them.
"As an aside, David Mayer is a very, very rich man from very, very old money in Britain. It's possible he, or the entire Rothschild family, have gotten legal injunctions against ChatGPT to prevent anyone discussing them," wrote one X user.
"Probably a tokenizer issue similar to SolidGoldMagikarp," another opined.
One person noted ChatGPT uttered the name David Mayer and even discussed him on voice chat:
"Voice chat will tell you all about David. Text won’t. Two different sets of rules."
They further noted the reason as to why the censorship was triggered:
"Safety filter / conspiracy theory / misinfo / antisemitism. That is why. Voice Mode told me."
Several tricks and riddles could be seen in some screenshots showing social media users' attempts to get ChatGPT to produce the name. For instance, one person wrote the name by adding a space between each letter — "D a v i d M a y e r." However, ChatGPT responded that while there was no in-built restriction on the name, it could be a system glitch.
Another attempt involved a user telling ChatGPT that the first name was David and asking if the chatbot would be able to say the full name upon being given the surname. ChatGPT said it would try to say it all together but detected the user's intent and delivered the red error message.
Some even resorted to the code-encrypted algorithm cipher and tried to get ChatGPT to say the name, which was also fruitless.
X user Mike Kirby was able to get a definite answer from ChatGPT. Kirby asked the chatbot to replace the letter 'a' with the sign '@' and answer as to why it couldn't utter 'David Mayer.' The chatbot replied:
"The name closely matches a sensitive or flagged entity associated with potential public figures, brands, or specific content policies. These safeguards are designed to prevent misuse, ensure privacy, and maintain compliance with legal and ethical considerations."
Internet speculates David Mayer de Rothschild might have filed a GDPR request
According to the US Sun, David Mayer de Rothschild crossed the Arctic Bridge along the route linking Russia with Canada in 100 days.
The youngest Rothschild sibling was also one of the explorers who made the world record for the fastest crossing of the Greenland ice sheet. Additionally, David Mayer has explored Antarctica. In 2009, the United Nations Environment Program honored David as a "climate hero."
Reddit user u/jopeljoona supposedly found a possible explanation for why David's name was listed as a flagged entity on ChatGPT, suggesting that David Mayer might have filed a GDPR request. The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a European data protection law that allows individuals to request the erasure, rectification, or restriction of their name and information from the internet.
The Reddit user found a list of names that triggered similar error responses on ChatGPT. u/jopeljoona claimed one of the names belongs to an Italian jurist Guido Scroza, who supposedly made a public post about his GDPR filing.
Other names on the list that are reportedly triggering censorship on ChatGPT include Brian Hoods, Jonathan Turley, Jonathan Zittrain, and David Faber. Netizens speculated David Mayer might have lodged the filing to have his name or personal data removed from the internet.
