TikToker and mom-influencer Hannah Hiatt is under fire over alleged child neglect and abuse. The young mother of two from Utah is a nurse by profession, who first went viral in October for her now-famous “17 diapers” video.
Since netizens began calling Hannah out over the treatment of her two-year-old son James, the parenting influencer seemingly turned off comments on her social media and went private on Instagram. However, the videos that sparked the controversy were reposted by others across Facebook.
The latest outrage was over a now-deleted video where James was seen sitting in a grocery cart at a store. As Hannah’s husband Braxton Hiatt approached their son with a product, James visibly flinched and raised his hands in a perceived attempt to block his face.
Many claimed such a response from a child that young can likely stem from fear or trauma. They further referred to older videos by Hannah Hiatt, where the couple withheld food from the toddler or completely refused to feed him anything for almost an entire day.
In another video, Hannah allegedly mentioned it was extremely cold in Utah and her son James needed a winter coat. However, the mother refused to spend $35 on a jacket from Walmart.
Netizens also criticized Hannah's previous refusal to go through prenatal care while she was pregnant. At the time, she reportedly cited not having insurance as the reason. Some pointed out that her toddler son is always seen with bruises on his face and legs in her videos.
Netizens have since expressed concern for the safety of James and Hannah's newborn baby. They also mentioned Child Protective Services and the need to have them involved to protect the kids.
In one older video, Hannah and her husband were seen eating out at a restaurant with James while he was younger. She captioned the clip "Tips for keeping a baby calm at a restaurant!".
At one point during the video, Braxton could be seen taking a small nibble of food out of his mouth and putting it on a fork to feed James. Netizens were appalled at the action.
Hannah Hiatt reportedly responded to netizens' allegations
When Hannah posted her "17 diapers" video in October, she received mixed reactions from people. She recorded herself collecting around 17 dirty diapers strewn around her house. Hannah told viewers that she and her husband usually collect all the diapers at the end of the day.
The momfluencer revealed in another video that she does not change her kids' diapers when they pee. It led people to believe Hannah only changes their "poopy diapers".
Some mothers empathized with Hannah and said they could relate to parental burnout through different experiences with their newborns.
On the other hand, the video sparked criticism from some netizens as they expressed hygiene concerns and questioned Hannah's parenting efforts.
Several people pointed out the apparent burnout was not stopping her from filming videos, editing them, and posting them on TikTok. Thus, the reason for not throwing out dirty diapers seemed baseless to most netizens.
Despite the initial support from some mothers, Hannah's other videos over the following weeks earned her the name "Ruby Franke 2.0" from some netizens.
Franke is a former momfluencer from Utah who is currently incarcerated for child abuse charges.
Hannah Hiatt responded to the allegations, particularly referring to the video where James flinched at her husband Braxton. She said:
"My husband is the sweetest, nicest, kindest, most loving, most nurturing father in the entire world."
Hannah claimed James and Braxton share the "strongest bond" she has seen in a father-son pair. She said her husband and son were just playing around in the grocery cart video.
However, netizens were not convinced and claimed most babies would not try to block their faces if some object was suddenly brought too close to their faces. They are now calling for the couple to be arrested and the kids taken away to a safer environment.
