Social media users have gone berserk after Kamala Harris started using the popular viral phrase “brat” in her Presidential campaign. The trend started by Charli XCX to promote her album, Brat, launched on June 7, 2024, has reached Harris’ campaign.
The Presidential candidate included “Kamala hq” in her X cover image written in black over a green background, similar to Charli XCX’s album cover. The same was mentioned by CNN in their segment, where a panel discussed how Kamala Harris is embracing the “brat” trend for her campaign as they decoded the meaning behind the phrase.
The trend reemerged on social media after Joe Biden announced stepping down from the Presidential elections and endorsed Kamala Harris for the same. Just after, Charli XCX tweeted “Kamala IS brat,” which made Harris’ team change her cover image to a Charli-inspired theme.
During the CNN discussion, the guests on the panel described how "brat" or "brat summer" is not related to someone being “badly behaved,” but means to enjoy oneself without being concerned about societal expectations.
Following the trend, the fans and followers of the album and Harris, have started creating several videos of Kamala Harris with the lyrics of the songs from the albums.
“Honest, blunt and a little bit volatile”— Charli XCX’s explanation of “brat” explored as Kamala Harris includes it in campaign
As Charli XCX posted about Kamala being a “brat,” the people responsible for promoting the Presidential candidate on social media took it as an opportunity and started embracing the trend. Charli XCX decoded the meaning a while back, before the release of her album in June.
In anTikTok interview held in June, 2024, Charli XCX explained:
“You are just that girl who is a little messy and maybe says dumb things sometimes, who feels herself but then also maybe has a breakdown but parties through it. It is honest, blunt and a little bit volatile. That’s Brat.”
As per US Weekly in an article published July 18, 2024, Brat summer is also a term associated with being a “brat,” as one tends to engage in activities of their choice, that bring happiness to them, without being concerned much about society.
As aforementioned, the trend was started by the popular pop star Charli XCX as she released her sixth studio album, Brat, in June 2024. The album cover has the same font, and color scheme as Kamala’s cover image on X.
The panel on the CNN show also pointed out that the phrase is mostly used by Gen Z, and the millennials have a brief idea about what it actually means.
While Kamala Harris’ team continues to use 'brat' aesthetics and phrases, social media users are going gaga over the same, with many commenting how Kamala’s running for the President had made it a “brat summer.”
As of this writing, neither Charli XCX nor Kamala Harris has addressed the reactions of the masses or the Brat campaign.
