Wisconsin Rep. Dave Considine has come under fire for sharing his opinion on the participation of transgender athletes in women’s sports categories. The Wisconsin State Assembly Republicans passed a controversial bill on Thursday, October 12, 2023, designed to exclude transgender athletes from participating in women’s sports.
They also passed another bill banning sterilization, castration, and irreversible hormonal treatments of trans youth.
Dave called it selfish of some parents to be concerned about their daughters potentially missing out on a scholarship due to biological males competing in women’s sports. He continued that it seemed to him that the said parents only expressed their worries about their daughters and not about building a powerful sports team.
The Democrat then spoke about his granddaughter who plays college sports. Dave Considine said that when he asked her how she felt about trans athletes competing in the same sports category, she reportedly responded by saying:
“If a trans woman was competing against me in the sport then that just means that person is better than me, I need to work harder.”
Rep. Dave Considine's controversial gender remarks spark outrage online
People strongly disapproved of Dave Considine's opinion about trans athletes' participation in female sports. Some said that he should be removed from Congress.
Republicans argue against Democrats' reasonings for trans rights
Dave also insisted that while there is a disparity between women and men in athletic fields, the difference is likely due to monetary reasons pertaining to training the athlete rather than a biological gap.
Republican Representative Jon Plumer shared his opinion about the controversial topic and said:
“As the father of 4 daughters, I cannot sit back and watch as females in high school and college sports are being forced to compete against biological males. It is not fair to them, creates physically dangerous situations, and is a direct attack on their rights.”
Other Republicans also confronted the Wisconsin State Assembly’s Democratic members’ arguments on minors having access to gender-affirming care.
Rep. Scott Allen stated that minors can fully comprehend the risks as well as the long-term consequences of their choices once they reach adulthood or a certain age of maturity, reasoning that it is important for these minors to be allowed the time to develop sufficient decision-making ability to make the right choice for themselves.
The bills now awaits Governor Tony Evers' approval to pass into law. However, Evers said that he would veto them.
