On Friday, October 4, Tesla CEO Elon Musk criticized the Federal Emergency Management Agency for the ways they handled the rescue processes in areas hit by Hurricane Helene.
Musk uploaded a screenshot where someone was reporting him how FEMA had allegedly obstructed them while the Starlink engineers tried sending aid to the hurricane affected regions. In another tweet Elon Musk wrote:
"@FEMA is not merely failing to adequately help people in trouble, but is actively blocking citizens who try to help! The big issue is FEMA is actively blocking shipments and seizing goods and services locally and locking them away to state they are their own..."
Amid these accusations against FEMA, Pete Buttigieg, the United States Secretary of Transportation, responded via tweet on October 5:
"No one is shutting down the airspace and FAA doesn’t block legitimate rescue and recovery flights. If you’re encountering a problem give me a call."
Elon Musk thanked Pete in a tweet for being responsive, despite some netizens accusing Musk of not being truthful.
"This is unconscionable!!"- said Tesla CEO Elon Musk while bashing FEMA
Along with the allegations, Elon Musk had shared a video on X, showing the damages made by the strong Hurricane Helene. In the tweet, Musk wrote:
"SpaceX engineers are trying to deliver Starlink terminals & supplies to devastated areas in North Carolina right now and is both failing to help AND won’t let others help. This is unconscionable!!"
The tweet further read:
They just took this video a few hours ago, where you can see the level of devastation: roads, houses, electricity, water supply and ground Internet connections completely destroyed."
In the tweet, he further wrote that FEMA didn't let deliver the essential services and that his "blood was boiling."
FEMA, however, didn't accept any of the allegations made the Musk, and called them false.
Republican Party politician Valentina Gomez also have a similar statement on the internet. She shared a tweet claiming that there were sources who confirmed the blockades.
In a tweet made on October 5, Valentina further addressed the Tesla CEO, and wrote:
"F*ck FEMA and their perimeter. It’s harder to get into Asheville, NC than into the United States of America. Let’s roll up together Elon. If we get arrested, we get arrested."
Jaclyn Rothenberg, FEMA director of public affairs, further issued a statement that FEMA had not confiscated or taken away commodities that were supposed to be sent to North Carolina in the regions affected by the natural disaster.
