What happened at Canna Coffee in Washington DC? Owner under fire for berating Uber Eats delivery driver in concerning video

The Washington, D.C., police are investigating Gregory Harris, the owner of Canna Coffee, after he was caught berating an Uber Eats delivery driver for not speaking English. Police revealed that the case is being looked into as a potential hate crime or assault. Meanwhile, the video of him being racist towards a Venezuelan Uber Eats employee has garnered millions of views online, with the restauranteur garnering backlash online as well.

In the video that has gone viral online, the owner of the Florida Avenue, Northwest D.C. restaurant can be seen yelling at Gregoria Amundarain. The latter revealed to Fox 5 that he resorted to recording the owner after the discussion between the duo escalated quickly and made him uncomfortable. In the video, the owner can be seen using expletives and saying:

“Learn English. Learn it. You make money in America, learn English!”

Gregoria Amundarain revealed in an interview with News 4 that this was the first time he was visiting Cana Coffee. He also shared that he had been working as a delivery agent for seven months and had been living in the States for two years. He added that he was working to support his two-year-old daughter, who lives in Venezuela.

In the video, Amundarain can also be heard saying in Spanish:

“He’s insulting me and I don’t understand what he’s telling me. That’s the store. That’s the store.”

Following the occurrence, Gregoria Amundarain said to Fox 5 in an interview:

“I’m moving on with my life and leaving this disappointing situation in the hands of the law.”

As the video circulated online, Cana Coffee was relentlessly blasted online along with its owner. Some comments online read:

“I thought this was the sort of thing only white karens did,” an X user said.
“Easiest way to lose your business,” another netizen said.
“This video is incredibly embarrassing. True clown behavior,” another platform user said.

D.C. police confirmed that no arrests related to the incident were made at the time of writing this article. Meanwhile, other reactions read:

“Anyone going to support Canna Coffee ice cream cafe is weird af. Especially since they only going cause they seen the video of the owner being blatantly disrespectful and racist,” an X user said.
“The owner of Canna Coffee in DC is a piece of s**t,” another netizen said.
“Trying to fight someone cuz they don’t know English is crazy! Shut down Canna Coffee in Washington, D.C,” another platform user said.

When News 4 visited the restaurant, the business reportedly did not allow them to record inside the establishment. They also refused to state the incident. Meanwhile, other reactions read:

“Hope that Canna Coffee and Ice Cream place in DC fails,” an X user said.
“This Canna Coffee thing isn’t super surprising, the guy was always weird and the store seemed sketchy as hell from when it opened,” another netizen said.

Canna Coffee is reportedly under investigation by multiple agencies

Fox 5 also exclusively uncovered that the restaurant was under investigation by the D.C. Alcoholic Beverage and Cannabis Administration, as the restaurant was formerly called “Mary Jay’s Exotic” and was reportedly illegally growing and selling marijuana. The restaurant has since received a warning outlining the potential consequences of continuing the illegal activity.

The D.C. Department of Licensing and Consumer Protection also issued two notices of infraction to the restaurant.

Meanwhile, Uber Eats released an official statement where they denounced the restaurant and announced that they were removing the business from their app.

The D.C. police also confirmed that an investigation into the incident was ongoing.
