Students of the Chippewa Valley High School were sent back to their homes early in the morning on May 22, 2023, after a student received a threatening phone call. According to school district officials, the threat was made the previous night, and the call was made from a Florida area code.
Parents of all the students were informed through an email at 9:10 am that all activities at Chippewa Valley High School would be canceled. The school also announced the dismissal of classes through a Facebook post and wrote:
"We are dismissing Chippewa Valley High School students early today while police investigate a threat that was made to a student at the school. We decided to do this out of an abundance of caution. All students and staff are safe."
The incident is currently under investigation, and anyone with information about the same is requested to call the Clinton Township Police Detective Decker at (586) 493-7846.
Chippewa Valley High School was put into lockdown following the threat
Chippewa Valley High School was shut down earlier on Monday when one of the students reported receiving a threat. While the incident was reported to the authorities, information officers rushed to the spot and secured the school by putting it in lockdown.
Although the call was made with a phone that had a Florida area code, no one has been arrested until now. The students who traveled by bus left earlier, while the rest were taken by their parents.
District officials also revealed that the other schools would continue to be operational for the day. Clinton Township Police Department also assisted in the same and ensured that the students were safely evacuated from the building. The school has expressed gratitude towards the students and parents for cooperating with the authorities while they carried out the evacuation process.
Several other schools have been threatened in the last few months
Various other schools have been the victims of similar threats in the past. The latest incident happened last month when Forest Parl Elementary School in Eastpointe was shut down when multiple threatening phone calls were made to the school.
Back in February 2023, local authorities were called to seven high schools in Michigan when false threats, called swatting, were made, leading to a lockdown and evacuation situation inside the school. Meanwhile, false threat was made to the Muskegon school district as well, and Nouvel Catholic Central High School was also the victim of a similar incident.
Following the Oxford High School shooting incident in November 2021, threats against high schools have witnessed an increase. The mass shooting incident at Oxford High School led to the murder of four students and injured seven others. 15-year-old Ethan Crumbley was charged with the crime, and he pleaded guilty to the same in 2022.
