The TikTok trend known as ‘Hopecore’ has recently gone viral. It first surfaced in late 2023 and grew significantly through 2024. TikTok users have been using this trend to post motivational quotes and movies to communicate love and optimism.

The videos frequently feature montages of happy events, piecing together footage of people being friendly or endearing in order to spread positivity. It initially began as a sports-themed content, but eventually developed into more family-friendly edits.

As per Dexerto’s September 30 article, the trend gained popularity because it encourages optimism. It involves showcasing the wonder of life, ordinary encounters with the natural world, and the innate decency of humanity and portraying animals, children, and older people in modest yet heartwarming deeds of kindness or joy.

In these videos, the phrase "Life is beautiful" frequently appears, highlighting the trend's emphasis on positivity and interpersonal relationships.

Spreading messages of hope is the main focus of the trend. As per India Black, an influencer who frequently shares 'hopecore' videos on TikTok, people utilize the hashtag to promote clips that curate messages of positivity.

As per the Independent's February 19, 2024 article, Black said,

"It's where people post content centering around amplifying positive connections; appreciation for the world around them; self-care; making peace with themselves and promoting feelings of hopefulness that can put a stop to a bedtime doom-scrolling session."

She also added,

"Hopecore is a celebration of both little and big things in life, and reminds us that a person's mindset will boil down to discerning between seeking out the good or the bad in every situation they face, and better days will come out of their choice to seek the good."

The trend focuses on videos meant to give the viewers hope and positivity. Usually accompanied by the song Evergreen by Richy Mitch and the Coalminers, they showcase positive moments captured on video and may have captions such as "Life is beautiful" or "Remember what's important."

However, there aren't any specific guidelines on how users should or should not use this trend. Additionally, according to National World's February 21, 2024 article, Louisa McGillicuddy, the trends lead on TikTok, stated:

“The content itself is a combination of this scrapbook-style slideshow of motivational quotes, illustrations, images, poetry and screenshots. The most popular form of hopecore content uses the photo mode feature on TikTok… With actual hopecore videos that don’t incorporate photo mode, the most common ones we have seen are quotes from interview clips that are just inspiring and optimistic.

She further said:

This could be old clips with public figures, celebrities, or people who are impressive – for instance, a NASA scientist...”

According to the same source, McGillicuddy also said that it is a relatively new trend on TikTok to go viral. On February 12, there were 180,000 creations, but by the following week, on February 21, there were 200,000.

On the other hand, according to a Metro article from March 2024, over 291,000 Hopecore videos had been uploaded using the hashtag. Some of the videos have received millions of likes and hundreds of comments.

Moreover, Dexerto's September 30 article reported that TikTok Waxyegg reportedly shared one of the first videos on January 27, 2023, contributing to the trend’s development. This version included a Kung Fu Panda 2 scene, where Po reminds Lord Shen that scars heal.

Even though Hopecore's original focus was on sports clips, it eventually grew outside of the sports world. On July 12, 2024, TikToker hopecore.o shared a video of toddlers reacting to their first time wearing prescription glasses, quickly becoming one of the most popular online videos related to the trend.

In just two months, the heartwarming video received over 100 million views and 23 million likes on TikTok. Additionally, content creators now use the hashtag #Hopecore to share positive, upbeat content that encourages happiness, positivity, and strong emotional bonds.

This trend, which puts a more serious and emotional spin on popular memes, is very similar to other online trends honoring optimism and the human spirit.
