Vice President Kamala Harris' 2019 tweet characterizing the Empire actor Jussie Smollett as a victim of attempted "modern day lynching" is still accessible online, even though the actor’s case was proven to be false. Stating the same and supporting the actor at that time, Harris uploaded a post on X on January 29, 2019 that read,
"@JussieSmollett is one of the kindest, most gentle human beings I know. I’m praying for his quick recovery.”
Harris further wrote that it was a “modern day lynching”, and nobody should have to fear for their lives due to their skin color or s*xual orientation. She further emphasized that everyone needs to stand up to this hatred. This came after Smollett claimed he was attacked by two masked men.
Nevertheless, now that Kamala Harris is in the running for President, Jussie Smollett is trending on X again.
Netizens took to the platform to dig up the incident and talk about it. Some X users were definitely against Jussie.
“Saw Jussie Smollett trending and was afraid for a moment he’d been “attacked” again,” jokingly wrote one user.
“Let us not forget Kamala's take on the Jussie Smollett hate crime hoax," reminded one user.
“Does anyone think it’s time to start investigating Kamala’s role in coordinating with Jussie Smollett to commit a fake hate crime?... Did she plan the hoax with Jussie to give her a media boost? Did she help protect him afterwards? I think we all know the answer,” claimed one X user.
“Don’t forget Kamala Harris is a race baiter who openly supported Jussie Smollett and his hoax. Do you honestly think this woman wants unity in America?” asked one X user.
Nevertheless, some spoke in support of Smollet.
“Y'all really bringing up Jussie Smollett right now while Trump is STILL walking around with that damn fix-a-flat band-aid on his ear pretending he was shot and that his ear magically grew back..” wrote one user.
“Right wingers are now bringing up Jussie Smollett”, one X user claimed.
“Eugene Roy bringing up Jussie Smollett like Kamala was on that actual case… Who is Eugene Roy, to talk about Kamala Twitter post #KamalaHarris2024..” wrote another netizen.
Actor Jussie Smollett is trending as Kamala Harris is running for President
As Joe Biden stepped down, Vice President Kamala Harris is now running for the Presidential race. Amidst all this, actor Jussie Smollett has been trending because in 2019 he claimed to be the victim of a hate crime, which Harris supported at the time.
Smollett, a Black and homos*xual actor, said two masked men attacked him in Chicago. After his fake case went viral, Harris described Smollett as kind and understanding and wished him a speedy recovery.
She further stated in the same tweet that,
“This was an attempted modern day lynching. No one should have to fear for their life because of their s*xuality or color of their skin. We must confront this hate.”
However, when Smollett’s story was proved to be false, Kamala Harris said,
“When someone makes false claims to the police, it makes it more difficult for other victims of crime to come forward.”
She went on to say that the actor's "false claims to police" had left her "sad, frustrated, and disappointed."
On the other hand, while talking about Kamala Harris’ tweet in support of Smollett, a retired Chicago Police Department chief of detective, Eugene Roy, said that Harris’ remarks were a "rush to judgment" that demonstrated a "hurried decision before all the facts are known.”
However, Harris, who is currently the front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination, did not remove her 2019 social media post backing up Smollett, even after it was established that the charges made by the Empire actor were untrue.
