The Balearic Government's Department of the Environment has launched an investigation to assess whether the filming of Katy Perry's latest music video of a song called "Lifetimes" has impacted the protected dunes of S’Espalmador, part of the Ses Salines Natural Park in Ibiza and Formentera. According to the press release issued by the organisation on Tuesday, the production company had not requested the necessary authorization to film the music video.

Katy Perry's "Lifetimes" lands her in trouble

Katy Perry shot her music video for the song “Lifetimes” on Ibiza and Formentera islands. The singer dances and jumps in different locations, including city settings, a buzzing nightclub, and natural surroundings. One such scenario was shot within the S’Espalmador dune system, protected by posts and cords restricting access. It has been reported that her whole crew was also present in the restricted area.

According to the sources, this has led to an initial inquiry from the Department of Environment. Nonetheless, it is unclear whether this is about a suspected environmental crime or the imposition of any fines, as such matters would be determined during an investigation which is currently underway. Moreover, it said that the production company did not have permission to shoot within this nature reserve, nor had it requested one.

The Balearic Islands government tourist website describes the S’Espalmador dunes as “well-preserved and holds great ecological value”. Situated north of Formentera, S’Espalmador is a private island owned by Ses Salines Natural Park since the 1980s. The islet spans approximately 2.9 kilometres in length and 800 meters in width (137 hectares).

Katy Perry isn't the only American star working during her time in Ibiza and Formentera. Will Smith has also used his stay on the islands, laying down his newest track at a high-end hotel's recording space in north Ibiza. Smith posted a video on Instagram called "Ibiza Sunset Vibes," showing snippets of him rapping and singing with pals, with an Ibiza sunset in the background.

While the inquiry is ongoing, Katy Perry has been seen basking in the sun and absorbing local culture on the Balearic Islands. However, "Lifetimes" has not been doing so well on music charts since its release on August 9th, 2024. Perry's previous single, "Woman's World", released in July 2024, has also not fared well on streaming platforms.
