Logan Clegg has been convicted of fatally shooting a retired couple in April 2022, who had gone out for a walk during the incident
As mentioned in the introduction, on Monday, October 23, 27-year-old Logan Clegg was convicted of killing a retired couple. Clegg was residing in a tent in the woods of New Hampshire. Clegg will be sentenced to life imprisonment, and his official sentencing is scheduled for December 15, 2023. After the verdict, Brian Reid, the deceased couple's son, spoke about Logan Clegg. He said,
"A liar, a thief, a murderer has been brought to justice today, more importantly forever. Let it be known that the legacy of my parents' humanitarian work, their kindness, their love for life will endure."
He further said,
"Let today be a reminder of the value of human life and the strength of community."
After shooting the couple, the 27-year-old man left the area. His lawyers, however, said that he left the place because he had violated his parole conditions and wanted to escape law enforcement. The parole was related to burglary and theft charges in Utah. The lawyers further claimed that he didn't flee because of the Reids.
Prosecutor Joshua Speicher described the killings as senseless and said,
"The state has proven to you over the past three weeks now that the defendant, and the defendant only, killed Stephen and Wendy."
Speicher added,
"We have proven this beyond a reasonable doubt. We have proven to you how he did it, when he did it, where he did it. What we don't know is why. We just don't know."
Authorities found the bodies covered in debris
Prosecutors also argued that they found shell casings and bullet fragments at the crime scene. Defense attorneys claimed that the discovery of shell casings wasn't enough to conclude that Logan Clegg killed the retired couple taking a walk near their apartment.
When cops discovered the bodies, they found that they were covered with leaves and debris in the woods and that it'd been several days since they were killed.
When authorities investigated, they discovered Clegg's tent was burned down. Police then spotted Clegg nearby, but he gave them false information and identified himself as Arthur Kelly. He then vanished but left some clues: several Mountain Dew cans near the site. Police later released his sketch and details to the public.
Jackie Reid, the deceased couple's daughter-in-law, said,
"Lifelong humanitarians, beloved worldwide. May Steve and Wendy rest in peace."
The defense attorney, Mariana Dominguez, claimed that the verdict was based on speculations only and that Logan Clegg wasn't responsible for the retired couple's death.
