Well-known vlogger and author Hank Green recently disclosed his diagnosis of Hodgkin's lymphoma. Mayo Clinic states that lymphoma is a kind of cancer that happens in the lymphatic system, a part of the body's germ-fighting network. The 5-year relative survival rate for stage I lymphoma is more than 86%. The survival rate is 78% for stage II and more than 72% for stage III.
Green revealed his diagnosis in a video shared on his YouTube channel, vlogbrothers. He started by saying that he had noticed changes in the last few weeks, including an expansion in his lymph nodes, and had visited his doctor. A biopsy was conducted, which revealed that he has Hodgkin's lymphoma. He added:
"She said, 'It's probably nothing. We'll send you in for an ultrasound.' I got an ultrasound, and the tech in the ultrasound room was like, 'I'm going to go get a doctor.' That's not what you want to have happened."
Hank Green stated that things don't happen so quickly when someone is in the American healthcare system. He mentioned that he would not undergo chemotherapy so soon but would start taking treatment, and he expressed gratitude to all those who supported him over the years. Green mentioned that his experience with friendships has been good, as he enjoyed their company. He ended by saying:
"Even though I don't feel bad at all night now except for some soreness because of the biopsy and maybe because my lymph nodes are big. I don't feel any symptoms of this. I feel fine. I don't even really feel fatigued. I feel stress symptoms."
What is lymphoma? Causes, symptoms, prevention, and more
The Mayo Clinic defines lymphoma as a type of cancer that happens in the lymphatic system. There are two types of lymphoma: non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and Hodgkin's lymphoma.
Common symptoms include painless swelling of lymph nodes in the neck, armpits, and groin, persistent fatigue, fever, night sweat, shortness of breath, unexplained weight loss, and itchy skin. Certain factors that can lead to lymphoma include age, impaired immune system, and infections.
It is the seventh most common cancer in men and the sixth most common in women. People can contract the disease at any age, including children, teens, and young adults, and the risk also increases with age.
Lymphoma can be treated, but it is dependent on the type of lymphoma. The treatment includes chemotherapy, immunotherapy medication, radiation therapy, a bone marrow transplant, or a combination of all four.
