As reported by CNN on December 3, "Deaths in 2024" became the most-visited Wikipedia page this year, garnering over 44,440,344 views. This isn't something new; between 2015 and 2024, pages about deaths in a year have ranked in the top five times.

According to the news outlet, the most viewed pages of the year revolved around the US popular culture and politics. Both candidates in the 2024 US presidential election - Kamala Harris and Donald Trump - ranked second and fifth on the list, respectively. Meanwhile, Lyle and Erik Menendez ranked fourth on the list.

In Wikipedia's annual list, the "Lyle and Erik Menendez" page ranked fourth. Commonly referred to as the Menendez Brothers, Lyle and Erik - aged 56 and 54, respectively - were convicted of killing their parents in 1989. Their case became one of the most infamous criminal trials in America.

The brothers came from a wealthy family and lived in Beverly Hills. Following their parents' deaths, they initially claimed that their parents were killed by unknown intruders initially. It took investigators some time to trace the crime back to them, which was confirmed after Erik confessed to the murders in a session with his psychologist.

After Lyle and Erik were convicted, they were charged with two counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances for lying in wait, resulting in a death penalty sentence.

As the trials started, the Menendez brothers claimed they committed the murders as an act of "self-defense," citing years of physical, s*xual, and emotional abuse at the hands of their parents. Meanwhile, prosecutors argued that the murders were premeditated, asserting that the allegations of abuse were fabricated to inherit their father's will.

The brothers are currently serving life sentences at Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility near San Diego, California.

After 35 years of the trial, Netflix released a documentary about the Menendez brothers in which the brothers shared their side of the story for the first time. The information was shared through audio interviews from the San Diego prison where they are still incarcerated.

Besides Lyle and Erik, other voices in the documentary include family, lawyers, jurors, journalists, and lead prosecutor Pamela Bozanich.

The documentary titled Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story premiered on Netflix on October 7. It quickly became the most-watched movie of the week, receiving 22.7 million views in its first week.
