Ethan Slater’s ex-wife, Lilly Jay, recently wrote an essay for The Cut and opened up about her health struggles and complications during childbirth. Lilly Jay shared that she had “survived preeclampsia,” and called it a “life-threatening birth complication.”
In the essay published on December 19, 2024, Slater’s former wife wrote:
“We had done it. He had arrived. I survived preeclampsia, a life-threatening birth complication, and finally, our finally was whole. Mine is a story of worrying in the wrong direction.”
She continued:
“As a perinatal psychologist, I knew all the statics - how vulnerable a marriage is in the postpartum period, how viral community connection is in preventing depression and anxiety, how parenthood impacts a whole family.”
She also recalled how she and her 2-month-old son moved countries to be with Ethan Slater “to support his career.”
As Lilly Jay shared her struggles and health issues, concerns about her condition grew. Preeclampsia, a condition that typically occurs after 20 weeks of pregnancy, can cause symptoms like headaches, high blood pressure, and swelling, according to Cleveland Clinic.

In her new essay, Lilly Jay spoke about his former husband, Ethan Slater, and singer, Ariana Grande’s alleged relationship, and stated how her divorce affected her. She stated how the “mundanity of new motherhood,” did not make her realise that Lilly and Ethan had a “growing distance” between them.
She said:
“On my darker days, I railed against the unfairness of a public divorce, asking my therapist, who would trust a cardiologist who had a heart attack because they never got an EKG? Of course, I am not owed anything, whether it be a job or the privilege of being any given person’s psychologist.”
Lilly Jay also said:
“Motherhood, I have learned, fills your time but not your mind. In the countless hours, I spend rocking my son to sleep, pushing his stroller, marvelling at his sweaty little hands grasping a crayon, I work diligently on my private project of accepting the sudden public downfall of my marriage.”
Lilly also explained how she feels the “absence of the life” that she had thought of, with her “high-school sweetheart.” She concluded the essay by stating how both, Ethan and Lilly have been devoted parents, as she claimed that they “fiercely” love their son.
However, Lilly’s revelation about preeclampsia is what left most of the masses shocked, as the condition is considered to be extremely serious and life-threatening.
As per Cleveland Clinic, preeclampsia is an emergency situation. However, no known cause of the condition has been discovered yet.
Ethan Slater and Lilly Jay started dating during high school and got married in 2018. The couple welcomed their first son in 2022 and soon filed for divorce in 2023. As the couple separated, news about Ethan dating popular singer, Ariana Grande started floating, however, the former couple has not spoken about the matter publically.
