Ohio County Sheriff Bruce Zuchowksi took to social media and addressed netizens to make a list of people supporting Kamala Harris and their respective addresses. In the post shared on Facebook on September 13, Zuchowksi wrote:
"When people ask me...What’s gonna happen if the Flip — Flopping, Laughing Hyena Wins?? I say...write down all the addresses of the people who had her signs in their yards! Sooo...when the Illegal human ‘Locust’ (which she supports!) Need places to live...We’ll already have the addresses of the their New families...who supported their arrival!"
The comment, however, didn't sit well with many. In response to the sheriff's post, a user called for the immediate suspension of Sheriff Zuchowski, criticizing his failure to uphold law and order by inciting violence and applying the law unevenly. Negative reactions from internet users prompted the sheriff to share another post on Facebook on Tuesday, September 17, 2024. In the statement, he claimed that his previous message was misinterpreted.
He further mentioned that he just wanted to convey the message that voting holds huge significance and that people should take responsibility for the candidates and policies they vote for. Zuchowski further shed light on the turmoil in the borders. The sheriff added:
"With elections, there are consequences. That being said…I believe that those who vote for individuals with liberal policies have to accept responsibility for their actions! I am a Law Man…Not a Politician!"
He concluded by expressing gratitude to the local people who supported his previous post. Bruce Zuchowksi, however, also revealed that many seemingly didn't agree with his point of view.
The September 13 post had also prompted the Portage County's NAACP chapter to hold an emergency meeting on Thursday, September 19, to discuss allegations of voter intimidation by the Portage County Sheriff. The same had been confirmed through an e-mail to the USA Today.
Emergency Meeting held by Portage County's NAACP will be open to the public
Portage County's NAACP chapter revealed they had received several messages from concerned citizens who feared "voter retaliation."
Despite the allegations, Bruce clarified that he was just expressing his opinion and didn't mean to attack anyone in any way. USA Today reported that according to the organization's Vice President Geraldine Hayes Nelson, the meeting would be open to the public. President Renee Romine further added:
"We are inviting a panel of subject matter experts and will have small group discussions and time for the small groups to ask the panel members questions."
One of the expected attendees of the meeting is Jon Barber, who is also the Democratic opponent of the sheriff. He described the Facebook post in question as "appalling." According to Barber, Zuchowski's tone towards Kamala Harris and migrants seemed "quite racist."
The New York Post reported that Bruce Zuchowski has been working as a sheriff in Portage County since 2021. He has been serving in Ohio law enforcement for about three decades. News outlets have been attempting to contact the Portage County Sheriff’s Office and Bruce Zuchowski.
