Elon Musk recently shared a tweet on X, hinting at launching Xmail, a possible competitor to Gmail. On December 15, an X user with the username @cb_doge uploaded a post on the social media platform, where he wrote a caption that read:

"𝕏 Mail would be cool."

The Tesla CEO took notice of the same and responded through another tweet on the same day. Musk wrote:

"Yeah. On the list of things to do."

As per reports by Times Now News, Xmail would be an email feature offered by X, formerly known as Twitter. The tweet by the billionaire prompted several users to post memes on the same.

While some seemed favoring the idea, others seemingly had a different perspective. Many netizens shared their take on the hint that Musk gave. A user wrote on X:

"Everyone leaving Gmail after XMail has been announced!!"

Another netizen commented on X:

"Yahoo mail laughing because they stayed uncontroversial..."
"I would have my mail delivered by carrier pigeon before I would ever use Xmail. What a joke," read a tweet.

While Elon Musk had hinted at the launch of the new email feature, no official confirmation about the same has been released as of now.

Xmail could prove to be a threat to several Gmail users, as per a report by Forbes

While Elon Musk teased launching the new email feature of X and some netizens were up for it, an article was published by Forbes in which it was mentioned that the feature might act as a security threat to Gmail users. The article published on December 16 further cited a tweet that Musk posted back in February 2024.

An X user (@natemcgrady), who was also a security engineer at X, posted a tweet on February 23, 2024, asking when the feature would be launched. To this, the Tesla CEO responded, saying, "It's coming."

According to Davey Winder, a prominent cybersecurity writer who the Forbes article, there could be phishing threats. The author further cited the possibility of AI-generated phishing threats in the current scenario.

As reported by The Express Tribune, the current global email market is dominated by Apple Mail, holding about 53.67%. Meanwhile, Gmail holds a 30.70% share. According to the article, if the new email features actually got released by Elon, it would cause disruption in the market.

Back in July 2023, Elon Musk expressed his desire to transform X into an "everything app." This was shortly after he had begun rebranding the Twitter app into X. Musk then mentioned that he wanted Twitter to become a platform that could act as a platform for "comprehensive communications and the ability to conduct your entire financial world."

It is, however, unclear that Musk's recent tweet about Xmail is related to his vision of making X an "everything app." No additional information about this new feature or its release is available as of now.
