Actress, comedian, and writer Whitney Cummings speaks out in support of Blake Lively amid the latter's lawsuit against Justin Baldoni. The 2 Broke Girls co-creator took to her TikTok on Friday, December 27, 2024, to share her thoughts on the ongoing controversy.
"I don’t like when guys… try to get points for being a feminist or an ally. When guys fight for women’s rights, it’s how they get laid!" Cummings noted during her 5-minute-long rant.
The comedian said that Baldoni's repeated claims of being a feminist should have been a red flag.
New York Times reported that Blake Lively sued her It Ends with Us co-star Baldoni on December 20, alleging a retaliatory smear campaign after she accused him of s*xual harassment while filming the film.
"This is, like, a sociopath’s idea of what the world needs"—Whitney Cummings on Justin Baldoni's self-help book for young boys
Whitney Cummings continued to note that Justin Baldoni was an active part of charities and non-profits fighting for equality and women’s rights. She claimed that the actor had "women's equality charity energy," adding:
"If I was a bad person, what’s the first thing I would do? Start a charity."
The comedian noted that Baldoni was on the board of another charity but claimed it was "probably fake and for tax write-off purposes." She alleged that it was a way for him to "get laid" by supporting causes fighting "childhood cancer." She continued:
"Why do I feel like in Justin Baldoni's Notes app apology he's gonna blame internalized misogyny, being too sensitive, and being in ketosis?"
Cummings also brought up Baldoni's 2022 self-help book, Boys Will Be Human. The book was aimed at young boys to help them embrace and express their fears. Showing an image of the book, she remarked:
"This is, like, a sociopath’s idea of what the world needs."
This is not the first time Whitney Cummings has critcized Justin Baldoni. According to The Blast's report dated December 27, the comedian had posted another TikTok video earlier this week where she mentioned that she was "less than shocked" about his behavior. She noted that it stemmed from Hollywood's history.
Calling it a "business," she explained that young actresses in the industry are often subjected to misogyny and abuse without any repercussions to the perpetrators. She noted that women, especially young actresses, faced working in adult settings without supervision.
What happened between Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni?
It Ends with Us was released on August 9, 2024. The film featured Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, and centered around domestic violence. While the film was a box office hit, it was laden with controversy. People magazine reported that during the film's press tour, there were rumors of friction between the cast and Baldoni. Eagle-eyed fans noted that the cast didn't follow him on social media.
The media outlet further stated that Lively faced criticism for making it seem like a light-hearted movie and downplaying the DV aspect during various interviews. She even faced backlash for promoting her hair care brand.
However, in her lawsuit, Lively alleged that she reported Justin Baldoni to the producers for creating a "hostile work environment." According to New York Times, this included showing her explicit photos and videos, discussing his s*xual preferences, questioning her about her personal life, and even including intimate scenes in the film not originally in the script.
She claimed that despite promising she wouldn't face retaliation for speaking up, Justin Baldoni hired a crisis PR expert, Melissa Nathan (Johnny Depp hired her during his trial against Amber Heard). Lively alleged that they launched a smear campaign against her during the press tour.
The civil complaint alleged that the actress suffered "grief, fear, trauma, and extreme anxiety," adding that her husband and children, too, were impacted. Further, it claimed that Lively lost several career opportunities in the wake of the campaign, including a chance to host the SNL season 50 premiere.
Several celebrities spoke in support of Blake Lively, including Amber Heard and her Sisterhood of Travelling Pants co-stars America Ferrera, Amber Tamblyn, and Alexis Bledel. Additionally, her co-stars from It Ends with Us continued to stand with her since the press tour.
In a statement shared with New York Times on December 21, Justin Baldoni, through his lawyer Bryan Freedman, denied the claims, calling them "shameful" and "categorically false." In light of the controversy, Vital Voices rescinded their Voices of Solidarity Award given to the actor.
Baldoni had not publicly reacted to Whitney Cummings's TikTok at the time of publishing this article.
