After defeating Vice President Kamala Harris, former US President Donald Trump was elected for a second term. Donald defeated Kamala by obtaining at least 270 of the electoral votes required to win the presidency.

Two weeks after the electoral votes are counted, the new president is sworn in at the inauguration ceremony at the US Capitol in Washington, D.C. Every year, voters assemble to see the inauguration as the next president of the United States takes office.

As a USA TODAY report, the US Capitol building in Washington, D.C., will host the next inauguration event on Monday, January 20, 2025. Every four years on this date, January 20, Inauguration Day is celebrated. The day is shifted to January 21 if January 20 falls on a Sunday.

Normally, the outgoing president attends the swearing-in ceremony. However, the current president-elect skipped Inauguration Day and went back to Florida in 2021 without shaking hands with Joe Biden, who defeated him in that campaign.

On Wednesday, the 78-year-old Republican candidate won the election by garnering more than the 270 electoral college votes that were required to win the presidency.

However, Trump will not take the oath of office for a few more weeks. This is because as the president-elect, Donald Trump will start choosing cabinet members for his term and this process takes time.

During these gap weeks, there are lot of formalities that the president-elect needs to follow. Despite not being present during Joe Biden's inauguration, Trump is already accustomed to the inaugural procedure, having won the presidency in 2016 and lost in 2020.

The inauguration day will take place two weeks following the counting of electoral ballots. On the US Capitol steps, the president-elect will take the oath of office at approximately noon on January 20, 2025. The Joint Congressional Committee on the Inaugural Ceremonies is in charge of organizing the event.

The inauguration speech, a troop review, and performances by celebrities are among the celebrations. Amanda Gorman, Lady Gaga, Garth Brooks, and Beyonce have all performed and spoken in the past.

Before the President-elect takes the oath of office, the Vice President-elect steps onto the inaugural platform and repeats the oath of office.

Since 1884, the oath that has been in use is:

"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God."

Additionally, in compliance with Section I, Article II of the US Constitution, the president-elect then takes another oath at noon, where he will say:

"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

Other than the swearing-in ceremony, the inaugural address, the outgoing president's honorary departure, the formal luncheon organized by the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies (JCCIC), the presidential escort, the Pass in Review, the inaugural balls, and the evening festivities are some of the other events that take place before and after the inauguration.
