Luigi Mangione, the suspect police have arrested and are now questioning in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, is from a prominent Baltimore family and has an Ivy League education. Cops identified Mangione as a "strong person of interest" for Thompson's assassination outside of a midtown Manhattan Hilton hotel on December 4.
New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said in a press conference on Monday, December 9, that cops arrested Mangione for gun charges. He was reportedly at a McDonalds in Altoona, Pennsylvania, when an employee thought he was suspicious and called the cops on him. In his possession, authorities found clothing and a "ghost gun" similar to what the suspected shooter wore and used during Brian Thompson's murder.
Per a CNN report on Monday, Luigi Mangione was identified as Nicholas Mangione's grandson. Nicholas was a prominent real estate developer in Baltimore. Their family owns the nursing home chain Lorien Health Systems in Maryland, the same elderly facility Luigi worked at some time in 2014, per his LinkedIn page.
Luigi Mangione reportedly graduated valedictorian in high school in 2016, attending the prestigious all-boys school Gilman School in Baltimore. He also attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated with a bachelor's and master's degree in computer science with a minor in math in 2020, per CNN.
Mangione reportedly founded the University of Pennsylvania's Game Research and Development, aka UPGRADE, per the Daily Pennsylvanian. The game development club allegedly grew to have 50 members, but the Penn Today article about it, with quotes from Mangione, has since been removed after the police's press conference on Monday.
His LinkedIn profile also went viral for listing his career accomplishments, including his work as a data engineer at the California-based company TrueCar. He also co-founded the start-up AppRoar Studios, which highlights his software development and engineering background.
The Daily Pennsylvanian also reported that he was inducted into the Eta Kappa Nu honor society for excellence in electrical and computer engineering before he graduated college.
Head of the private school where Luigi Mangione called news of him allegedly shooting Brian Thompson "deeply distressing"
Henry P.A. Smyth, the Head of School of the private all-boys Gilman School where Luigi Mangione graduated, reportedly sent an email to parents and the members of the school community. The email allegedly came after news of Mangione allegedly killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson came out. Per CNN, Smyth said in the email:
"This is deeply distressing news on top of an already awful situation. Our hearts go out to everyone affected."
Smyth also confirmed that Mangione graduated from Gilman School in 2016 but noted that the school has no other information about the suspected Thompson shooter other than what's being reported in the news.
What's new in Luigi Mangione's arrest?
As of 6:20 pm ET, Luigi Mangione has arrived at the Blaire County Courthouse in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, per CNN. Altoona police officers mentioned to the outlet that cops had interviewed him following his arrest.
Mangione is set for a preliminary arraignment tonight, according to a spokesperson for the Pennsylvanian State Courts. As previously reported, he appeared in court in person for the arraignment.
That said, Luigi Mangione, despite being arrested concerning UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson's fatal shooting, is only facing gun charges in Pennsylvania. He will be extradited to New York, where he will face the charges for Thompson's killing.
