On October 27, Wonka star Timothée Chalamet made a surprise appearance at a lookalike concert by YouTuber Anthony Po in Lower Manhattan, New York City. The event attracted hundreds of people and several curly-haired doppelgängers, with one person also winning a $50 prize. The event garnered thousands of RSVPs through the online invite.
Timothée Chalamet briefly posed with numerous fans and other lookalikes dressed as the actor’s movie characters, like those of Dune and Wonka. As the event seemingly created a stir at Washington Square Park, police officers were forced to manage the crowd and disperse several event attendees, including slapping Anthony Po with a $500 fine for an “unpermitted costume contest.”
Meanwhile, Timothée Chalamet snuck into the event by hiding behind a mask and a baseball cap.
Speaking about the event, Paige Nguyen, a producer for Anthony Po, said in an interview with Fox59:
“It started off as a silly joke and now it’s turned pandemonium.”
For those uninitiated, Anthony Po, who also goes by the moniker of Anthpo, is best known for his short skit content. The 23-year-old has amassed nearly two million subscribers on YouTube.
In recent days, his extravagant and bizarre videos like Can I convince a monk to crash a party, I got 24 superheroes to compete for $10,000, and I was New York’s Cheeseball Man have garnered millions of views online.
More about Anthony Po as Timothée Chalamet look-alike contest goes viral online
Anthony Po was born in Woolwich Township, New Jersey, on July 30, 2001. The Kingsway High School graduate studied marketing at Rutgers University.
In December 2018, Po released his first YouTube video, titled USB mouse making my car fly. He eventually branched out his content to create hilarious skits that mimicked television shows like Breaking Bad, iCarly, The Office, and Avatar: The Last Airbender.
His videos under the College Experience series went viral as he recorded himself enjoying university life with his friends. Anthony Po eventually went on a hiatus from content creation to return on May 14, 2024.
Anthony Po landed himself in controversy earlier this year after he created a video where he spent 200 days undercover as a Furry. For those unaware, the Furry community comprises people interested in combining human and animal characteristics, often in a s*xual manner.
Po recorded himself participating in Furry parties, which garnered immense flack from the Furry community as they believed the YouTuber was stereotyping them in videos and filming people without their consent. Po has since apologized.
Inside the viral lookalike contest
Fox59 reported that at least one person was handcuffed at the Timothée Chalamet contest, and charges against that person are still pending.
At Po’s Timothée-themed event, contestants were asked about their French language skills, as the actor is fluent in the same, how they managed to make the world a better place, and about their romantic intentions with reality star Kylie Jenner, whom Chalamet is rumored to be dating.
When event attendee Lauren Klas was asked what makes a good Timothée Chalamet, the 27-year-old told Fox59:
“It’s all in the nose. All of his bone structure really.”
21-year-old Staten Island resident Miles Mitchell eventually won the competition after dressing in a purple Willy Wonka outfit.
