Author Caroline Calloway took to X on December 10 to allege that she had slept with alleged suspect Luigi Mangione. The tweet sparked conversation following the latter’s arrest on Monday, December 9. The 26-year-old has been accused of fatally shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on Wednesday, December 4.
The author of Scammer took to X to say:
“OMG GUYS I LITERALLY F**KED THE UNITED HEALTHCARE CEO ASSASSIN.”
In a follow-up tweet, she claimed that she was unaware of him being an alleged shooter when they got intimate. She then said, “That I know of. But still!!!!”
For those uninitiated, Luigi Mangione has been charged with second-degree murder, one forgery charge, and three weapons possession-related charges. He was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania after a McDonald’s employee alerted the cops of him being present in their branch.
Caroline Calloway is a controversial influencer and author who wrote the books I Am Caroline Calloway and The Cambridge Captions, among others. She first sparked netizens’ interest back in 2019 after she was accused of paying for bot followers and having a friend write her Instagram captions.
Inside the Caroline Calloway controversies, as the author claims to have slept with Luigi Mangione
Caroline Calloway graduated with a degree in History of Art from Cambridge University in 2016. Her ex-friend Natalie Beach revealed in a 2019 The Cut exposé titled “I Was Caroline Calloway” that she was getting paid to ghostwrite Calloway’s Instagram captions.
She also alleged that Calloway had bought fake followers on the social networking site which subsequently led to her getting a six-figure book deal to write a memoir called School Girl (it is worth noting that the book did not get published and Calloway also returned her book deal advance). Natalie Beach said:
“Caroline was caught between who she was and who she believed herself to be, which in the end may have been the most relatable thing about her. This is why, when people ask me if Caroline is a scammer, I try to explain that if she is, her first mark is always herself.”
Calloway amassed over 676,000 followers on Instagram as of now. She also has a second Instagram account called @readingmakesyouhotter, where she shares the books she is reading.
The 33-year-old also made headlines in October following Hurricane Milton after she claimed on Instagram that she had no plans of leaving her Sarasota, Florida, beachfront home despite warnings to evacuate.
Calloway also sparked backlash online in 2019 after selling tickets for poorly planned creativity workshops. As per The New Yorker's January 2019 article, many opined that they were “overpriced.”
Meanwhile, it remains unclear as to whether Calloway was joking about her alleged connection to Mangione. The latter will be extradited to New York to face the charges there. According to NBC News December 10 report, Mangione shouted during his extradition hearing:
“It’s completely out of touch and an insult to the intelligence of the American people and their lived experience!”
Mangione has been denied bail twice. As per Forbes, his attorney Tom Dickey told reporters on December 9 that Mangione pled not guilty to the charges in Pennsylvania, and he is expected to do the same in New York.
