More details are coming out by the second regarding the assassination attempt on July 13 on the former United States President and presumptive Republican candidate, Donald Trump. The name and details of one of the victims, Corey Comperatore, were revealed by Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro. An ex-firefighter, Comperatore was unfortunately killed in the gunfire.
The attack, which is being termed the most serious assassination attempt on a president since 1981, took place during a live-streamed election rally. The suspect, identified to be 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, missed Donald Trump by a matter of centimeters, only grazing his ear.
The other victims were not as lucky. Speaking of Corey Comperatore, the Pennsylvania Governor labeled him a hero. Corey Comperatore was a former firefighter from the area. The 50–year–old was seated just behind the former president, putting him in the direct line of fire. He was attending the rally with his wife and daughter.
Shapiro said:
“His wife shared with me that he dove on his family to protect them.”
He reiterated that Corey Comperatore “died a hero.”
A GoFundMe has been started on behalf of the Comperatore family and is currently placed well beyond the fundraising goal. As per his LinkedIn profile, 50-year-old Corey Comperatore was a Project & Tooling Engineer at JSP. He had worked there for over 29 years.
Corey Comperatore's grieving family shares their tributes on social media
The victim’s sister, Dawn Comperatore Schafer, also shared a few words about her brother and his last act, which was saving his family. In a Facebook post, she shared:
“The PA Trump Rally claimed the life of my brother, Corey Comperatore. The hatred for one man took the life of the one man we loved the most. He was a hero that shielded his daughters. His wife and girls just lived through the unthinkable and unimaginable.”
His daughter Allyson Comperatore also shared some words in memory of her father. She said that what was meant to be a day her father looked forward to, ended up being “the most traumatizing experience someone could imagine.”
She also described Corey Comperatore as a hero, who sacrificed his life for his family. She shared:
“The media will not tell you that he died a real-life super hero. They are not going to tell you how quickly he threw my mom and I to the ground. They are not going to tell you that he shielded my body from the bullet that came at us.”
She continued:
“He loved his family. He truly loved us enough to take a real bullet for us. And I want nothing more than to cry on him and tell him thank you. I want nothing more than to wake up and for this to not be reality for me and my family.”
Apart from Corey Comperatore, two other as-of-yet unnamed victims are reported to be in critical condition.
Donald Trump spoke up about his experience on the social media platform, Truth Social

Former President Donald Trump described his experience with the shooting with a post on his social media platform, Truth Social. He said:
“I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place.”
In a follow-up post, Donald Trump credited God for saving his life. The former president said:
“It was God alone who prevented the unthinkable from happening.”
He also said:
“We pray for the recovery of those who were wounded, and hold in our hearts the memory of the citizen who was so horribly killed. In this moment, it is more important than ever that we stand United, and show our True Character as Americans, remaining Strong and Determined, and not allowing Evil to Win.”
Donald Trump has also revealed that despite the attack, he will continue his rallies, his next destination being Milwaukee.
