Tragedy struck on Monday, December 23, 2024, as Olympic snowboarder Sophie Hediger lost her life in an avalanche at the Arosa mountain resort in eastern Switzerland. Walter Reusser, the Sports CEO at Swiss-Ski confirmed the passing away of the 26-year-old, and said in a statement to Reuters on December 24, 2024:
"We are speechless, and our thoughts are with Sophie's family, to whom we express our deepest condolences. With the tragic death of Sophie Hediger, a dark shadow has been placed over the Christmas days for the Swiss ski family. We are immeasurably sad. We will keep Sophie an honourable memory.”
While the family of the snowboarder has not yet spoken up on the death, however, her Instagram posts reveal that Sophie Hediger was dating Dario Wuthrich, who is also a Swiss ice hockey player. As per Elite Prospects, Dario is 25 years old and plays for the Hockey Club Ambrì Piotta.

As Sophie Hediger passed away, athlete Dario’s club, Hockey Club Ambrì Piotta issued a statement on X on December 24, 2024:
“The Hockey Club Ambrì Piotta joins the grief of defenseman Dario Wüthrich for the sudden and tragic death of his beloved partner Sophie. To Sophie’s family and Dario, sincere condolences and a big hug from the whole white and blue family."
As per Dario Wuthrich’s LinkedIn page, he completed his education in 2019 from the Kaugmann EFX, Wirtschaft & Gesellschaft. He then joined EVZ as a professional hockey player, before moving to the Hockey Club Ambrì Piotta in May 2023.
Furthermore, Sophie, born in 1998, competed in the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing in the women’s snowboard cross and the mixed team snowboard cross. She also participated for four consecutive years in the FIS Snowboard World Cup in 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021.
Parade reported that Sophie Hediger competed in Nordic combined skiing and skeleton. She placed 7th in the mixed team snowboard cross and 19th in the women’s category.
Sophie Hediger’s last post on social media was also about her sport, where she claimed to be “happy” with her form. Sharing a bunch of pictures, she wrote on December 15, 2024:
“P9 in the first worldcup of the season @cervinoskiparadise - crashed in 1/4-finals. Happy about my riding and my best qualification I’ve ever had with p3. Thank you @bombac.rok & @lorenzo_marten for the super fast boards & congrats to all our ladies for the great team result.”
Following Sophie Hediger's tragic death in an avalanche, social media was flooded with tributes. Her family has not yet shared details about her funeral or memorial services, and little is known about her survivors.
